Gary O’Neil has to make two bold changes to Wolves lineup to help Matheus Cunha

Wolves are desperately seeking their first three points of the Premier League season with a trip to Brentford up next.

The challenges keep coming for Gary O’Neil’s side, who have already played five of last season’s top seven in the Premier League.

Wolves have truly been put to the test so far this campaign, with just one point on the board from a possible 18.

Next up comes a visit to the Gtech Community Stadium to face Brentford, who are yet to lose at home this term.

Two changes Wolves must make against Brentford

Wolves will have to travel to Brentford with the belief that they can get a result at the Gtech, which the squad is more than capable of doing.

A strong performance over 90 minutes is required however, O’Neil could also help his side by making two tweaks to his starting XI.

By withdrawing Mario Lemina and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, the manager could hand Carlos Forbs and Rodrigo Gomes the chance to shine, which would impact outside of handing the attackers an opportunity.

By installing two wide men into the system and withdrawing Lemina from midfield, O’Neil can unleash a two-man pivot in midfield, with an attacking three ahead made up of Forbs, Matheus Cunha and Gomes.

As stated, the switch wouldn’t only be beneficial for the two young talents, but also to Cunha, whose best position is undoubtedly playing in the pocket behind Jorgen Strand Larsen.

The Brazilian is Wolves’ best attacker, emphasising the need for O’Neil to honour his strengths by building the front line around him.

Bold call for Gary O’Neil to make

While it seems that Bellegarde’s days in this system are numbered, there’s a doubt over whether the manager would consider dropping Lemina momentarily.

The ‘incredible’ midfielder is club captain and an incredibly valuable asset to the squad but right now, it’s difficult to ignore the fact that he’s struggling to find a secure place in the current set-up.

Added to O’Neil arguably not knowing where to best accommodate the 31-year-old, some believe that Lemina needs a rest, as journalist Liam Keen explained after the defeat to Liverpool.

“I don’t think he ever will be rested but I think there’s an argument to say that he probably needs a rest,” Keen said on The Keen & Judah Show

“He looks like he’s struggling with that knee, and it looks like he’s running himself into the ground. He was crestfallen at the end of the game, he was in tears.”

Only time will tell of O’Neil shares a similar opinion to the Wolves expert, with the fixture against Brentford presenting the chance to rotate.
