Gary O’Neil could repeat Diego Costa transfer blunder after Wolves offered Premier League flop

Wolves could be at risk of repeating a major transfer blunder from 2022 if Gary O’Neil explores one emerging offer.

So far, the summer transfer window has been a statement for Wolves, who have recruited strongly early in preparation for the upcoming season.

Gary O’Neil has tied down four players permanently, all of which being young talents who can bolster the squad in a range of positions.

Despite the manager looking to the future with the captures of Tommy Doyle, Pedro Lima, Jorgen Strand Larsen and Rodrigo Gomes, it’s been suggested that the club could now look at a veteran signing.

Wolves one of five Premier League clubs to be offered James Rodriguez

It’s been reported that Wolves have been offered James Rodriguez, whom O Jogo claim could return to England this summer.

The 33-year-old, who is represented by Jorge Mendes, has departed Sao Paulo and is rumoured to have been offered to Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, Brighton, Fulham and Wolves.

The truth to the speculation is yet to be determined however, O’Neil must be wary of one transfer blunder at Molineux that happened in similar circumstances back in 2022.

Rodriguez could become a Diego Costa repeat at Wolves

While Rodriguez has a stellar reputation having won two Champions League titles and shone on the biggest of stages, the forward is now nearing the end of his career.

It’s been ten years since the Colombian was picked up by Real Madrid following his performances at the 2014 World Cup, with his career path highlighting how much time has passed.

Since leaving Madrid in 2020, Rodriguez has represented a club per year, signing for Everton, Al-Rayyan, Olympiacos and Sao Paulo, where his form has been somewhat underwhelming.

While the Colombia international could offer O’Neil added experience, he could also become a clone of Diego Costa’s extremely uneventful move to Molineux in 2022.

Fosun acquired the former Premier League ace as a free agent, seeing him join the club for a year, where he scored one goal in all competitions.

Costa was a loved figure in the Midlands as his personality shone through although, the £50k-a-week wages ended up translating to just one goal.

A similar reality could face the club if Rodriguez was signed at this point in his career, with the veteran merely a shell of the dazzling player he once was.
