Gary O’Neil could finally get what he wanted from £4m Wolves star with reunion possible

There’s an opportunity for Gary O’Neil to reunite with one of his signings at Wolves this summer.

O’Neil’s time at Wolves ended in December 2024, as the former manager was sacked after a disastrous start to the season.

At the time of the Englishman’s dismissal, Wolves had conceded as many as 40 goals in only 16 Premier League games, sitting five points from safety.

Since leaving his role in the West Midlands, O’Neil has been linked to several jobs in England, as the former Wolves manager is on the radar of a number of Championship clubs.

Gary O’Neil could eye a reunion with Tommy Doyle

After taking some time away from management following his sacking, O’Neil could soon return to the managerial sphere.

O’Neil is on Sheffield United’s radar, should the Blades decide to sack Chris Wilder this summer after failing to secure promotion to the Premier League.

If the ex-Wolves boss were to make Bramall Lane his home, he could be in a position to lure one of his signings at Molineux to join him in Sheffield.

Tommy Doyle is expected to leave Wolves only a year after making his move permanent, as it’s become increasingly clear that Vitor Pereira isn’t a fan of the midfielder.

Interestingly, Doyle was linked to Sheffield United in January, already being a highly thought of player in the area following an impressive 2022/23 loan at the club.

If O’Neil were to take charge of the Blades, he could lure Doyle to Bramall Lane, which is an imaginable scenario given how much of an admirer the manager was of his £4m signing at Wolves.

O’Neil could finally get what he wanted from Doyle

Sunderland and Wrexham have shown an interest in Doyle since Sheffield United eyed their former loanee in the winter market.

It remains to be seen where the midfielder ventures next, but if O’Neil is welcomed to Sheffield, the Englishman will surely be eyeing his former player’s transfer status.

O’Neil wanted things to work for Doyle during his time as Wolves manager, understanding then that competition in the squad made things impossible for the 23-year-old.

Unfortunately, Pereira has an identical view on Doyle, making it clear that the Manchester City academy product has no place in his plans.

Could O’Neil and Doyle reconnect this summer? It’s a surprising possibility.
