Four of Matt Hobbs’ best signings at Wolves and two of his worst as sporting director nears exit

Matt Hobbs’ tenure as Wolves’ sporting director appears to be coming to an end after almost three years.

Hobbs took on the role of sporting director at Molineux in November 2022 and has since conducted an array of transfers.

In a shock update provided by Johnny Phillips, it was revealed that Wolves are set to part ways with Hobbs as the sporting director title is to be abolished.

Jorge Mendes and Valdir Cardoso are back on the scene to play a part on the transfer front alongside Vitor Pereira, with Matt Jackson prepared to lead recruitment.

It’s all change at Wolves early into the transfer window, but perhaps not as expected.

As Hobbs edges closer to the exit, here’s a look at some of the Englishman’s best and worst signings.

Joao Gomes

Starting with one of Wolves’ greatest signings ever, and undoubtedly Hobbs’ best purchase was Joao Gomes.

Signed for just £15m from Flamengo, Gomes has become one of Wolves’ best players and promises to deliver a significant profit to the Old Gold when he eventually moves on.

The midfielder has flourished since making the move to the Premier League, in what was a sensational capture by Hobbs and Wolves’ recruitment team.

Andre

Speaking of Gomes, it’s impossible to exclude summer signing Andre from the list.

Like his midfield partner, Andre made the move from Brazil, signing from Fluminense in a £21m deal.

Liverpool wanted to sign the 23-year-old the year prior but missed out, emphasising just how impressive Wolves’ capture was.

Andre was one of the Premier League’s best-performing midfielders in his debut season at Wolves, signalling just how high the Brazilian’s ceiling is.

Emmanuel Agbadou

Another signing from the 2024/25 calendar makes our list, as Hobbs struck gold with Emmanuel Agbadou.

Hobbs knew Wolves fans would love Agbadou and his assessment was absolutely right, as the Ivorian hasn’t looked back since arriving at Molineux.

Signed at a time of dire need, the 27-year-old handed Pereira the defensive stability he so desperately needed, being a tremendous acquisition for just £16.6m

Matheus Cunha

He might not be a Wolves player anymore, but Matheus Cunha represents one of Hobbs’ best buys.

Though the Brazilian’s price tag of £44m was a luxury, he was worth every penny, bringing a new level of flair to Molineux.

Manchester United didn’t hesitate to pay Cunha’s release clause, a fee that will give Wolves £62.5m to invest in his replacement.

Sam Johnstone

Wolves’ decision to sign Sam Johnstone was slammed in the first half of the season as the Englishman’s peculiar arrival disrupted Jose Sa, particularly as Gary O’Neil chopped and changed his number one.

After only a year, Johnstone wants to leave Wolves, which is unsurprising given the mess of his £10m transfer.

Wolves fans aren’t sold on Johnstone, who represents one of the club’s less impressive signings under Hobbs.

Carlos Forbs

Another baffling transfer was the arrival of Carlos Forbs on an initial loan from Ajax.

Hobbs admitted he’d been tracking Forbs for some time, but his suitability to Wolves and the Premier League in general makes such rather puzzling.

Pereira doesn’t deem Forbs to be good enough for Wolves, paving the way to the winger’s return to Ajax after playing only 617 minutes.
