Four best and four worst Wolves transfers of the Fosun era

Fosun bought Wolves back in 2016, and there have been quite a few transfer dealings ever since.

The Old Gold made their way back to the Premier League under this ownership, and much of that was due to smart business in the market.

However, that good business seems to have dwindled over the years, and fans have been left frustrated with the lack of ambition from Fosun.

The Wanderers faithful are often heard chanting for the ownership to sell. It has been a rocky relationship between the board and the fans, and the former have got some things right in the market and also quite a few things wrong.

Here are the four best and four worst transfers by Fosun at Wolves, in no particular order.

Four best transfers for Wolves from the Fosun era

Ruben Neves

Scooping up the signature of Ruben Neves while Wolves were still playing in the Championship was an incredible coup by the club.

Neves has been one of the best to wear the Old Gold over the last few years, and the club could do with a player like him right now.

His signing marked a real show of ambition from the ownership to get the club promoted, and the midfielder went on to play 253 times for the Wanderers.

Signed for just around a fee believed to be near £16 million, Neves is no doubt one of the club’s best-ever transfers. He scored quite a few worldies too.

Matheus Cunha

Matheus Cunha’s first couple of months at Wolves made it look like he could have been on the other side of this list, but eventually his quality shone through.

Signed for an initial loan in the winter window of 2022/2023, the Wanderers had an obligation to buy for £44 million.

The Brazilian would go on to be an important talisman for the club, scoring 27 goals and registering 13 assists over the next two seasons in 55 Premier League matches.

Unfortunately, the position the club were in meant they could not hold him past two full seasons, and he ultimately left to join Manchester United for £62.5 million earlier in the summer.

Rayan Ait-Nouri

Rayan Ait-Nouri is another player who joined on an initial loan deal, but the move was later made permanent for £9.8 million.

The Algerian made 157 appearances over a five-year spell at Molineux and truly came into his own in the last two seasons.

In 2024/2025, the defender scored four goals and got seven assists. His performances would earn him a move to Manchester City, and Wolves would agree to a total package of £37 million for him in the 2025 summer window.

It was a shrewd signing, and it worked out well for both the club and player.

Joao Gomes

Joao Gomes is the only man on this list that is still at the club.

The Brazilian was signed for £16.2 million in the winter of 2023, and he has gone on to be one of the club’s most important players.

The midfielder is part of Vitor Pereira’s leadership group, and he has worn the captain’s armband on multiple occasions. Throughout his short time at the club, he has already racked up 98 appearances for Wolves.

Hopefully there are many more years of Joao Gomes in the Old Gold to come.

Phil Ofosu-Ayeh

Phil Ofosu-Ayeh was signed on a free contract, but his signing is still one of the worst.

Despite being contracted to the club for three years, he did not make a single appearance for Wolves.

Unfortunately, injuries were the main factor behind the failure of the transfer, and in 2020, he was released. He went on to play for Halmstad in the Swedish league from 2021 to 2024, before most recently playing for PSS Sleman in Indonesia.

He will go down as one of the most forgettable players to have worn the Old Gold, or in this case, to have never done so.

Fabio Silva

Fabio Silva was Wolves’ record signing back in 2020, but the Portuguese striker never hit the ground running following his £35 million move.

He played 72 times for the Premier League club, scoring just five goals. It is not the return on investment you would want from a record signing.

His time at the Wanderers was littered with multiple loan moves, as all parties sought to turn his career around. However, he would ultimately leave the club in the summer just gone for around £22 million.

Silva now plies his trade for Borussia Dortmund, and his time at Wolves can only be described as a disaster.

Patrick Cutrone

Before Fabio Silva, there was Patrick Cutrone.

The Italian was one of the most highly rated youngsters across Europe at the time the Old Gold signed him.

However, life at Molineux would not be easy. He signed for an initial fee of £16.2 million in 2019 and would be shipped out on loan to Fiorentina just halfway through the season.

He totalled just 29 appearances and only ten starts, scoring only three goals.

Gonçalo Guedes

Goncalo Guedes was signed for a hefty fee of £27.5 million, and his first season did not go to plan.

The Portuguese played just 18 games during his time at Molineux in the 2022/2023 season, and he would ultimately be sent on loan for the following two campaigns.

The forward did play a more prominent role last season, scoring twice and registering six assists in 29 games, but it was not deemed a worthy return to keep him at the club.

Wolves sold the player to Real Sociedad for a reported fee of just £3.5 million. It was a poor investment from the club.
