Fosun may have given themselves a problem that could cost Wolves their Premier League status

Wolves have had a nightmare start to the season – and Fosun have arguably made one specific decision in recent times that could prove extremely costly.

The owners of Wolves are coming in for major criticism at the moment, with Wolves bottom of the Premier League table.

The team are yet to win a game in the top-flight, and have taken just two points from a possible 24.

And the poor form stretches back to last season, with Wolves’ last victory coming against Leicester City all the way back in April.

The pressure is now starting to mount on Vitor Pereira.

Some Wolves fans have already called for Pereira to be sacked, with there being very little to suggest he can turn things around.

But Fosun have certainly given themselves a problem, with the current situation quite similar to what happened with Gary O’Neil last season.

On September 18, Wolves confirmed that they had handed Pereira a new contract.

Talks had taken place about the potential for him to extend, but the decision was put on the backburner while the club operated in the transfer window.

In the end, Wolves gave Pereira fresh terms, with the announcement coming after the Premier League defeat to Newcastle United.

Just days after that contract announcement, Wolves turned in their worst performance of the season against Leeds United, losing that game 3-1.

Plenty of Wolves fans said that the timing was wrong to give Pereira a new contract, and now Fosun have a problem.

Because they gave Pereira a new deal, it means that the owners will potentially persist with the Portuguese for longer than if they had not given him that contract.

Last season, we saw how Wolves stuck by Gary O’Neil right up until December, with the home defeat to Ipswich Town proving to be the final straw.

Wolves had been woeful for weeks leading up to that game, and many supporters had called for O’Neil to go after the 5-3 defeat to Brentford on October 5.

But as O’Neil had been handed a new contract ahead of the 2024/25 season, he stayed in place all the way up until December 15.

Thankfully, Wolves were able to stay up relatively comfortably last season, with Pereira doing a great job after he succeeded O’Neil – although the challenge from the newly promoted teams was very poor.

Wolves could get cut adrift

Wolves gave Pereira a new contract in a bid to usher in stability, following a chaotic summer.

But this now rather locks the owners into Pereira, and this could be dangerous.

We could again have a scenario whereby the manager overstays his welcome, but the owners are trying to save face because of the contract.

Of course, everyone associated with Wolves hopes Pereira can turn things around, and he might yet.

But the signs have not been good so far, and the pressure will soon crank right up. And fans wanting a swift exit for Pereira likely won’t get their wish as Fosun try to give him as much time as possible.

It could potentially mean there is simply too much work left to do for the successor if Pereira does eventually get the chop.
