Brilliant Ladislav Krejci development should inform a major Wolves decision

The Wolves captaincy has been passed from pillar to post over the last few years, but a new candidate may now have emerged to wear it from next season.

Toti Gomes is the official club captain right now, having taken the armband ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, succeeding Nelson Semedo.

Semedo had worn the armband for the second half of last season, after the departure of Mario Lemina in the winter window.

Before that, Max Kilman was the skipper, with Ruben Neves and Conor Coady coming before him.

Toti has not featured all that much this season for Wolves which hasn’t really been ideal given he’s the captain.

You ideally want your skipper on the field at all times really, with leadership so important.

Perhaps the captaincy is something that will again be looked at this summer, with Wolves likely to be dropping into the Championship – and Ladislav Krejci ought to be considered for the role.

Why Ladislav Krejci is a strong candidate to be Wolves captain

Last season, after Semedo left, there was no obvious choice for the captaincy.

It ended up being Toti, but arguably he is not a natural leader. He is certainly not a leader in the same way as Coady and Neves were.

Toti has been out of the team so much this season, and that has seen the armband go to various different players, including Matt Doherty, Joao Gomes and most recently Jose Sa.

the armband needs to go to someone who is going to be in that team every single game, and setting an example through quality and consistent performances.

And Ladislav Krejci feels like the ideal choice.

He arrived at Wolves having already showcased leadership credentials. Before his move to Girona, he was the captain at Sparta Prague for several seasons.

And of course, some will have seen the news in recent days that Krejci is now the captain of the Czechia national team, which further underlines his leadership qualities.

He is not a big shouter like Coady, but he has looked far more vocal than Toti on the pitch for Wolves.

He has also always spoken well in interviews, and he just seems like a solid professional and a driver of standards.

Wolves need to keep Krejci

Of course, Krejci is currently on loan at Wolves.

But the club will be buying him this summer, as per a clause that was negotiated as part of the loan agreement with Girona.

He’ll be bought for around £20 million, taking the total sum of his move to Molineux to £26 million (£6 million loan fee).

It remains to be seen if any other clubs will then come in and try to sign Krejci.

Surely Wolves would be demanding about that fee to sell him on. Whether he has played well enough to demand that kind of money remains to be seen.

But certainly, Wolves should be looking to make him the new captain.

He’ll have been at the club for a year and is the natural choice, and a genuinely solid player who’ll be in that team every game.
