Wolves defender Yerson Mosquera has made it clear that he’s not going down without a fight to secure his place in the Colombian national team for the 2026 World Cup.
The 24-year-old defender’s determination is palpable, declaring: “I won’t make it easy for them, that I’m going to fight for my spot,” in a recent interview with AS.
It’s no secret that Wolves have had a season to forget, languishing at the bottom of the Premier League table.
But Yerson Mosquera has remained a regular fixture in the squad, using this challenging season as motivation to bolster his chances of making the Colombian squad.
The defender’s last cap for Colombia though came in 2024, when he scored in a victory over Argentina. With the next World Cup on the horizon, he knows that regular game time is crucial.
“It’s obvious that if you play, you have a better chance of making the national team,” he added.
Mosquera speaks on World Cup ambitions

Mosquera’s drive to make the Colombian squad is fuelled by his previous international experience and his desire to compete at the highest level. His goal against Argentina in 2024 remains a highlight, but he is eager to add more caps to his name.
The Colombian national team is stacked with talent, and Mosquera acknowledges the uphill battle he faces to secure a spot.
He said: “I’ve spoken with several of them, and I’ve told them I won’t make it easy for them.”
For Mosquera, the difficult season with Wolves isn’t just a setback – it’s an opportunity for growth.
“Beyond any situation, the only thing left is to take advantage of this, to keep maintaining the possibilities that still exist and to keep growing as a player and as a person,” he reflected.
He’s now started 15 of the last 16 Premier League games for Wolves, and is clearly admired a lot by Rob Edwards. In order to make Colombia’s final World Cup squad, he’ll undoubtedly need to keep on featuring heavily.
Mosquera is a fighter if nothing else
Fighting is certainly in Mosquera’s nature.
The star has his critics, but no one can ever accuse the South American of not being fully committed and fighting for the cause.
He also gives 100%, and this makes him popular with quite a lot of fans.

He undoubtedly does need to curb his enthusiasm at times. But Mosquera’s passion should be embraced.
And as Wolves look ahead to the Championship next season, Mosquera could be a very important player, with his physicality likely to serve him well in English football’s second tier.
