Yerson Mosquera sends message to Wolves fans after making Premier League debut in Arsenal defeat

Wolves defender Yerson Mosquera sent a message to fans after finally making his Premier League debut against Arsenal.

Wolves kicked off their season with a 2-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium, but put in a decent performance all things considered.

Wanderers were always going to find it tough getting any points in north London. Arsenal are expected to challenge for the title again this season, with many people tipping them to actually win it ahead of Manchester City.

But Wolves did OK in the capital and had some bright spells in possession. In previous games against Arsenal in recent times Wolves have been swatted aside and this was not the case on Saturday.

Arguably, the biggest positive of the day for Gary O’Neil was the performance of Yerson Mosquera at the back for Wolves.

Mosquera is perhaps the player in the squad who many Wolves fans are most excited to watch this season.

The Colombia international signed for the club three years ago, but has been made to wait for his Premier League debut after suffering a bad hamstring injury shortly after joining.

He spent 2023 on loan with FC Cincinnati, before moving to Villarreal for the second half of 2023/24. He impressed at both clubs and on Saturday, Mosquera started Wolves’ Premier League opener.

He featured in a back four, with Toti Gomes his partner.

Mosquera put in a very assured display at the back, and it was Toti who arguably looked more like the debutant.

Mosquera used the ball nicely, and got stuck in. The aggressive youngster battled well with Kai Havertz in particular, and there is a great chance now that he will keep his place and start against Chelsea.

The 23-year-old took to social media after the game with Arsenal to post a message to supporters, which read: “Let’s turn the page and prepare for the next game.”

Mosquera debut was fantastic

So Wolves fell to defeat in their opening game, and most fans would have probably expected that against a top side.

But there were certainly positives to take and the performance of Mosquera was one of them. He was very, very impressive.

It cannot have been easy debuting against a team like Arsenal at the Emirates, but not once did Mosquera look out of place and as stated above, it was Toti who actually looked like the rookie on the day, not Mosquera.

There was a reason O’Neil wanted to keep him around for this season, and it already looks like that will prove to be the right decision from the manager,
