Wolves youngster Dexter Lembikisa earns impressive recognition despite defeat in Copa America

The Copa America has now kicked off and Wolves youngster Dexter Lembikisa has wasted no time showcasing his talents for Jamaica.

Throughout the summer, fans across the globe have a chance to watch some of the most anticipated tournaments in the world.

Both the Copa America and 2024 Euros are underway with Wolves players participating in both.

One player who has already made headlines is Lembikisa. The right-back started the 2023/24 season off at Championship side Rotherham before Lembikisa had a successful loan spell at Hearts in 2024.

This form has now continued into the Copa America where the 20-year-old made the final Jamaica squad.

Lembikisa’s Copa America journey kicked off on Sunday, June 23 against fellow North American side Mexico. The two nations are both guests of the tournament hence their participation.

However, unfortunately for Jamaica, Mexico triumphed in their opening game in Group B, with Gerardo Arteaga scoring the only goal of the game.

Despite this, Lembikisa was seen as the best player on the field. WhoScored gave the youngster an 8.01 rating, a sensational rating.

During the game, the right-back made four dribbles and three tackles at a 100% and a 75% success rate respectively.

On top of this, he had a total of three shots all of which were on target as well as three clearances.

The youngster is now showing signs of his full potential against a formidable opponent. With Ecuador and Venezuela still to play, the right-back and Jamaica will fancy their chances to progress.

This summer, Gary O’Neil has the opportunity to assess many of his squad that weren’t a part of the plans last season. Yerson Mosquera is one of the most anticipated players while outcasts such as Daniel Podence and Goncalo Guedes will also return as it stands.

However, one player that should be in O’Neil’s plans is Lembikisa. The right-back has come through the Wolves academy since he was 13 years old and made multiple appearances in the 2022/23 season.

After spending time away and developing, he could now be a useful squad player. Both Nelson Semedo and Matt Doherty are both ageing with the former going into the last year of his contract.

Keeping a young player like Lembikisa in and around the squad would help integrate him into the side and potentially turn him into a regular in the coming seasons.
