‘Wolves was home’ – Danny Batth sends heartwarming message ahead of Blackburn Rovers clash

Wolves face a visit to Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup on Sunday and they’ll come up against one former Molineux hero.

It’s been a fantastic week for Wolves. Vitor Pereira’s men boosted their Premier League survival hopes with a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa.

Supporters then had even more reason to feel elated as Matheus Cunha penned a new contract at Molineux, ensuring he wouldn’t be departing in the transfer window.

It was then a frantic deadline day as Wolves confirmed two new signings, with Nasser Djiga and Marshall Munetsi arriving from Red Star Belgrade and Reims respectively.

Now, the Old Gold will be looking to continue their momentum in the FA Cup after beating Bristol City as they face a reunion with centre-back Danny Batth.

Danny Batth pens heartwarming message to Wolves

Batth has a special place in his heart for Wolves. He came through the academy at Molineux from the age of 15 and spent almost a decade in the first team.

The no-nonsense centre-back amassed 212 appearances for the club and was part of the Wolves side that won the Championship title in the 2017/18 campaign.

Following an incredible period at the club, Batth joined Stoke City in a £4 million deal in January 2019 and has since played for multiple second-tier sides.

Now plying his trade for Blackburn Rovers at the age of 34, the veteran defender has reflected on his time at Wolves with this being the first time he’ll come against them since leaving six years ago.

“I’m excited for the game as I’ve not had the opportunity to play against Wolves since I left,” Batth said via Rovers TV. “I’m looking forward to it and it’s the FA Cup, so we’ll embrace it.

“Wolves was home. I came all the way through the academy and I was fortunate to play for the first team, captain the first team and go on to see some success.

“It was a brilliant spell and it’s a place I’d call home. When you’re from the area and play for your local team, it means so much. It was a really good period of my career and a time I look back on fondly.”

How Batth has fared for Blackburn this season

Admittedly, Batth has entered the twilight years of his career but the Englishman has still played a vital part of Rovers this term.

John Eustace’s men are currently in fifth position in the Championship and Batth has made 28 appearances, scoring twice.

Remarkably, the former Wolves hero ranks in the top 7% among defenders for clearances and aerials won in the second tier this term.

It suggests the defensive brute is showing no signs of slowing down despite his age, and he’ll be eager to get one over his former club this weekend.
