Wolves warned of major ‘stumbling block’ in search of ideal Gary O’Neil replacement

Attention has now fully turned towards Gary O’Neil’s future at Wolves following their latest humiliation.

Wolves were thrashed 4-0 by Everton on Wednesday as the Old Gold were exposed for their defensive frailties once more.

The Wanderers needed to respond after their diabolical 4-2 defeat to Bournemouth last weekend, but this performance was even worse, with Gary O’Neil expected to be sacked as a result.

Fans chanted against O’Neil at Goodison Park, demanding that he departs the club, yet he remains in the managerial hot seat at Molineux.

That said, the Wolves board are becoming impatient with O’Neil, and replacements are being sounded out in case he’s dismissed.

Wolves eyeing Graham Potter but there’s a ‘stumbling block’

According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, Wolves are eyeing former Brighton and Chelsea manager Graham Potter as a replacement for O’Neil, with West Ham also keen on him to replace Julen Lopetegui.

Potter is many fans’ number-one candidate to succeed the Englishman in the dugout but, journalist Liam Keen has already warned fans of a ‘stumbling block’ in securing his signature.

The 49-year-old, who has been out of work since his dismissal by Chelsea in April 2023, wouldn’t want to work under the self-sustaining model applied by the current ownership.

Add to that their position in the league table, and Keen thinks it will be hard to attract many established managers to succeed O’Neil.

Speaking on the E&S podcast, Keen said: “It becomes more difficult to bring someone in based on the model Wolves are using.

“This self-sustaining model of selling your best players, reinvesting and going again, it becomes unattractive to certain levels of manager, hence why they had to bring in someone like Gary O’Neil who was unproven at the time having had a brief spell at Bournemouth.

“So, Graham Potter is the number one choice, should be based on his credentials in my opinion. However, unfortunately for the Wolves fans who would want Graham Potter to come in, it seems unlikely he would take the role with exactly that self-sustaining model being the stumbling block for him.”

David Moyes is also on Wolves radar as new manager search begins

As Keen mentioned above, Wolves have a huge challenge on their hands to hire a highly reputable manager, should they choose to sack O’Neil.

Fosun will only offer a limited transfer budget, with funds generated from selling their best players rather than his own pocket.

This self-sustaining model can only take a club so far and it’s one reason why Wolves are battling at the bottom of the Premier League.

Failure to invest in the squad and leaving themselves short at centre-back is another contributing factor to their downfall, with David Moyes emerging as another Wolves candidate who wouldn’t want to work under the current ownership.

Keen revealed that the Scotsman, who has managed the third most Premier League games in history, would be unlikely to take the job if it was offered to him.

“David Moyes is another name that fans have been speaking about and it would be a similar situation for him,” Keen added.

“He becomes unlikely at this stage to take that job based on the movement and promises he would have in terms of leading the club moving forward.”
