Wolves told they would actually risk their Premier League status if they do one thing

Wolves look set for a relegation battle – and pundit Danny Murphy has suggested the club could be about to do something that risks their Premier League status.

It has been a terrible season so far at Molineux, with Wolves sitting in 17th place, but level on points with 18th-placed Ipswich Town.

So many things have happened this season and many feel that dropping into the Championship at the end of the season is a distinct possibility.

Vitor Pereira recently replaced Gary O’Neil as manager and did get off to a really good start.

But the wheels have fallen off again in recent weeks – and Wolves are bang in trouble.

And now we have a situation whereby Matheus Cunha could actually leave the club this month – something Danny Murphy thinks could be costly.

At the moment, speculation is rife about Cunha, who is a target for Nottingham Forest amongst others.

Cunha is a special player and most Wolves fans want him to stay at the club.

That did look a certainty only a couple of weeks ago.

But Cunha has been stalling over a proposed new contract at Wolves, and all the noise has made some feel that he is going to be sold. Fans were left unimpressed by Cunha’s body language against Chelsea, as was Pereira.

For Murphy, this would be a major risk.

He said on talkSPORT earlier today: “What I’ve seen from Wolves so far and what I’ve seen from him is mostly positive. He’s a class act, he’s powerful, great awareness, I wouldn’t call him prolific but he’s a goal threat. He makes things happen.

“They let him go, I fear for them. If they keep him, he could be the difference, that’s how important he is.”

Wolves could be relegated if Cunha leaves

There is a very real possibility that Wolves’ stay in the Premier League could come to an end in May if Cunha leaves the club in the coming days.

Wolves have been woeful this season, but are somehow not currently in the relegation zone – and Cunha has been a major reason for that.

Matheus Cunha for Wolves (January 2023-present)
Appearances – 78
Goals – 26
Assists – 13

With 10 goals and four assists to his name, he has certainly played his part for Wanderers.

As Murphy says, he’s a player that just makes things happen.

We’ve seen him do some truly special things in a Wolves shirt, so the club losing their talisman will have a huge impact. And not just in terms of the club losing a top player – Cunha is also a big personality and extremely popular in the dressing room. It’s like his teammates will be gutted if he goes.

Thankfully, in the last hour or so, it’s been claimed Cunha is not for sale and Wolves do expect him to stay.
