Wolves told they made a ‘big mistake’ that already needs addressing in January

Heading into the final week of the transfer window, there was a mixture of opinions on how well Wolves had done.

It was always going to be tough replacing so many key players in one summer, and there was a growing feeling that Wolves were on the right track.

But when deadline day passed with no new signings to speak of, the mood changed.

And Wolves have now been told why that is.

Liam Keen and Nathan Judah critical of a mistake Wolves made in the window

The prevailing feeling at Wolves this summer was one of impatience. Yes, new signings were being brought in, but there was always the caveat that more is needed.

When deadline day arrived, the expectation was that Vitor Pereira would get another midfielder, but that didn’t happen. And Liam Keen and Nathan Judah think that was a big mistake.

Judah says: “You know, this was a big, big disappointment that they didn’t get a midfielder over the line. And it will show, and Wolves could quite easily be made to pay with not getting this deal done.”

Wolves have a strong midfield. It may be the strongest aspect of the side. But the cover isn’t there.

Keen continues with the same rhetoric, saying: “Yeah, it’s a really big mistake not to bring a midfielder in. I think that’s the first thing I have to say because Andre and Joao Gomes, they’re fantastic players, but the drop in quality when one of them is not available is pretty staggering.”

New Wolves signing Ladislav Krejci is a relative unknown in midfield

Ladislav Krejci was signed as a centre-back for Wolves. That is where he has played in recent seasons.

Krejci does have midfield experience, but not at international level nor in a top league. To say he is the solution is misguided without evidence that he can play the position effectively for Wolves.

Pereira will try him out there, I’m sure, but that seems more like a contingency plan than a viable selection week in, week out.

Keen and Judah aren’t convinced by Krejci as the stand-in and believe a midfield signing has to be made in January.

Keen remarks: “You’ve got to try and find adequate replacements between now and January because, god forbid one of these two has an injury or suspension and they’re out for a period of time, this team is going to be hindered heavily by that loss.”

In reality, this should have been done in August. Hopefully it doesn’t come back to haunt us.
