Wolves target Matheus Cunha has been compared to Roberto Firmino

Wolves are in talks with Atletico Madrid to sign Matheus Cunha in January – and the star has previously been compared to Roberto Firmino.

Wanderers are seeking to improve the squad for the second half of the season after an awful start.

Julen Lopetegui is hoping to turn things around, but will need a few additions next month to help him do that.

It has been suggested Wolves could bring in two forwards, and Cunha is the subject of interest at the moment.

The Brazilian has not had a great deal of game time this season, and is way down the pecking order at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Cunha joined Atleti in the summer of 2021, but the move hasn’t really worked out for him. A mid-season move could therefore be in the offing, and Cunha could be a decent addition for Wolves.

According to a feature from the Bundesliga’s official website, Cunha is somewhat similar to Liverpool’s Firmino in terms of play style.

They say: “Yes, they are both Brazilian, yes they are both forwards. But those are far from the only reasons why Cunha and former Hoffenheim attacker Roberto Firmino are alike.

“Much like the former Bundesliga star, Cunha honed his skills on the streets of Brazil, giving him a one-up on defenders.

“He can beat them with his speed, skill or intelligence to drift from his marker, having practiced in every position across the front line.

“And much like Firmino, Cunha – even when leading the line – can be found dropping into midfield to pick up possession and link up play with teammates. It’s part of the reason why he’s such a hard attacker to defend against because more often than not, he’s not where you expect him to be.”

Firmino came to England back in 2015, with Liverpool paying Hoffenheim £29 million.

The star has been a wonderful signing for the Reds, scoring 107 goals and making 78 assists in 348 appearances.

He’s been a top Premier League player over the years, and has won the Premier League and Champions League with Liverpool. He has also won the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup.

If Cunha really is anything like Firmino, then that’s reason to get excited about this transfer link.

Firmino has been superb for Liverpool. He hasn’t always gotten the credit he’s deserved playing alongside headline grabbers like Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. But he’s been integral to Liverpool’s success over the last four or five years.

Arguably Wolves need to be bringing in someone who is clinical. Cunha doesn’t really fall into that bracket, but if he can get those around him to become that – as Firmino does – while chpping in himself here and there, then he’d still be a great addition.

Former Hertha Berlin head coach Bruno Labbadia said that Cunha ‘has something special’ and that ‘he can always produce something with a moment of individual brilliance’.

Cunha grew up idolising the great Ronaldinho, so Wanderers fans could expect to see a lot of flair in his game, which is a bonus.
