Reported Wolves target Goncalo Ramos was on target for Benfica against Newcastle United in the Eusebio Cup yesterday.
The two teams clashed at the Estadio da Luz, with the Portuguese outfit running out 3-2 winners.
Ramos started for the Eagles and it did not take him long to make his mark.
In the 15th minute, the 21-year-old rose highest from a corner to head beyond a flailing Nick Pope.
The youngster has been in good form of late for Benfica.
He grabbed a couple of goals for the club in their friendly against Fulham, which they won 5-1.
Forward Rafa Silva, who has also been linked with Wolves earlier this year, also really caught the eye against Newcastle.
He was a real menace for the Magpies, with a lot of Newcastle fans waxing lyrical about him and his lively performance on social media.
Currently, Wolves are very light in attack – specifically at centre-forward.
The club decided to loan out Fabio Silva to Anderlecht last week, which left only Raul Jimenez as an option for Bruno Lage.
Today though, news has dropped of an injury to Jimenez that could see him ruled out for as long as eight weeks in the worst case.
He’s going to miss at least a month, meaning Wolves’ need for a new striker is now absolutely enormous.
It has previously been reported that Benfica would only sell Ramos. And apparently he is valued at £34 million (Record).
Goncalo Ramos in fine fettle for Benfica as Wolves lose Jimenez to injury
Wolves officials are now under pressure following the injury to Jimenez.
A new striker was already on the agenda, but it has now become paramount that at least one comes in.
It remains to be seen if that man will be Ramos.
He’s certainly enjoyed a productive pre-season ahead of 2022/23.
There’s strong competition for places up top at Benfica at the moment. Henrique Araujo and Roman Yaremchuk have also both been in the goals over pre-season.
Perhaps the idea of being the main man at Wolves – at least for a little while – will appeal. And even once Jimenez was back fit, he’d still get plenty of minutes.
But of course, he’s reported to have quite a high asking price and it’s not clear whether he’d be within budget for Wolves.
