Wolves surprisingly top Premier League metric after seven games, but it might not be a good thing

Wolves are bottom of the Premier League table, but find themselves top of three metrics in the Premier League.

It has been a poor start to the 2025/26 campaign for Wolves, who have picked up just two points so far and are yet to win in the Premier League.

Following the release of the fixtures, and then seeing how the club struggled in the transfer window, fans didn’t really expect too much in the beginning.

But a haul of just two points from seven games is alarming, and Vitor Pereira needs to start getting some results.

It has been a rather chaotic start to the season for Wolves so far.

And now, some data has emerged to further emphasise this.

The Premier League is known for its fast pace, relentlessness and intensity.

It is often said by players who come from overseas that the pace of the English top-flight is like nothing they’ve experienced before.

And this season, Wolves have really tapped into that.

According to new data published by Opta Analyst, Wolves are currently the side who take the shortest delay when it comes to both corners and throw-ins.

For corners, Wolves have an average delay time of 29 seconds, which is just less than Manchester City (29.1). The team with the largest average delay time is Wolves’ next opponents in the Premier League Sunderland, who take 45.1 seconds.

In terms of throw-ins, Wolves have an average delay time of just 12.7 seconds. This is the shortest delay time of any Premier League club. Brentford take the most time with 25.4.

Wolves are also inside the top 10 for goal kicks, taking 29.3 seconds.

Opta Analyst also provide an average rating for getting the ball back in play based on these three metrics. Wolves are the fastest team at getting the game going again, doing so in 24.1 seconds.

This follows another somewhat surprising statistic recently that Wolves are making the most tackles per 90 (24.3) out of any side in Europe’s top five leagues.

Wolves may need to slow down

It can obviously be a good thing to act quickly on set-pieces.

Sometimes, teams can catch their opponents napping by getting the ball in play as quickly as possible.

It is interesting to see that Wolves are the quickest team on average when it comes to getting the ball back in play.

Of course, Wolves are winless in the Premier League after seven games so far having picked up just two points, and have also conceded 14 goals – some of which have been very sloppy.

So perhaps in certain situations, Wolves might just need to slow things down a little.
