Wolves starlet has already been invited to train with first-team just weeks after signing

Tawanda Chirewa has only been at Wolves for a matter of weeks – and he has already been invited to train with the first-team.

The Wanderers U21s swooped for the 19-year-old back in September to bolster their midfield ranks.

Chirewa came in from Ipswich Town, for whom he did actually make his first-team debut. That came as a second-half substitute against Colchester United in an EFL Trophy group stage fixture.

In doing so, he became the second-youngest player ever to feature for the Tractor Boys after Connor Wickham.

He penned a two-year scholarship with Ipswich in July 2020 and then signed his first professional deal a few months later.

Wolves were able to land him recently, having monitored him for quite a while according to Wolves’ Head of UK academy recruitment Harry Hooman.

Chirewa has enjoyed a good start at Wolves, and is already now training with the first-team…

U21s manager James Collins has been speaking about Chirewa after his first weeks at the club.

It’s safe to say he is fairly pleased with what he’s shown so far.

Collins has also revealed that Chirewa has made a big enough impression to warrant an invite to first-team training.

He said (Express & Star): “Tawanda has done very well with us and that’s why he’s with the first team – and that’s brilliant for us. He’s a boy with talent but also has the bit between his teeth. He’s got drive and he isn’t cruising.

“It’s been a bit of a mix. He’s trained with us for the majority but over the last week or so they decided they wanted him to go with them.

“We often have boys go down and train with them on different days, sometimes it’s for a day and sometimes it’s a bit longer. He’s happened this time to stay a bit longer.”

Chirewa was recently named among the nominees for the PL2 October Player of the Month award.

Collins also said that Nathan Fraser – a player he recently really talked up – has picked up a small injury.

Very promising signs over Chirewa

This is fantastic to hear about Chirewa, who is clearly a player the club are very excited about.

To have been invited to train with the first-team having not been at the club for two months yet shows his ability and potential.

Hooman said of Chirewa when he signed that he was ‘an athletic, talented player with the ability to score and create goals’. He is also someone who ‘wants to get on the ball and is not afraid to take responsibility and take risks to make things happen’.

Fans definitely ought to keep an eye out for Chirewa.

The Wolves academy has developed some great talents in recent times, and Chirewa might just be another potential future star.
