Wolves star was ‘on fire’ today in 3-0 win for his country

Wolves fans have not been able to get enough of Hwang Hee-chan so far this season – and the winger continued his fine form for South Korea today.

The 27-year-old has been Wolves’ best player alongside Pedro Neto so far in 2023/24, showing a ruthless edge in front of goal.

He’s hit seven goals so far this term across all competitions, meaning this is already his best goalscoring season with the club.

Hwang was actually linked with a move away from Wolves in the summer, with several clubs admiring the star. But everyone associated with Wolves will be delighted now that he didn’t leave.

Hwang was in action for South Korea today against China – and it was apparently another great display from the Molineux man…

South Korea took on China today in their second World Cup qualifying match in Shenzhen, and it was a comfortable day at the office with Jurgen Klinsmann’s side winning 3-0.

Tottenham Hotspur star Heung-min Son was the star of the show for South Korea, scoring twice and providing an assist for Seung-hyun Jung.

The Spurs captain said after the game that the China team and media saying they knew how to stop him was the fuel he needed for his great performance.

But someone else who played really well was Wolves star Hwang, with respected South Korea journalist Sungmo Lee writing on X, formerly Twitter: “Hwang Hee-chan is on FIRE for Korea in today’s game as well. He is really in form for both his club and country right now!”

Sofascore data indicates that Hwang was pretty heavily involved during his 72 minutes of time on the pitch. He had 65 touches and completed 42/46 passes (91% accuracy), with one of those counting as a ‘key pass’.

Hwang was typically industrious, contesting 18 ground duels which was the most of any player in the game. He won 10 of those which was again the most of anyone.

Hwang didn’t score himself, but he did win the penalty that allowed Son to open the scoring. He showed great anticipation to get into the box and pounce on a loose ball to draw a late challenge from the defender.

Great to see Hwang continuing to shine

It’s really good to see Hwang continuing to play really well, even if China are only ranked 79th in the world.

He’s had a few quieter games for Wolves of late, but he’s clearly feeling very confident right now and the Molineux faithful will hope that continues for as long as possible.

Hwang being in this rich vein of form is extremely satisfying to see because it hasn’t always been plain sailing for him at Molineux. He’s had some periods of poor form at the club and some struggles with injuries, but he’s playing better than ever now. Gary O’Neil recently branded the star ‘excellent’, and raved about his intelligence.

Given how well he conducts himself off the pitch as well, it is all the better to see him shining.
