Wolves’ stance on reappointing Bruno Lage as manager after Vitor Pereira sacking

Wolves are still searching for a new manager to replace Vitor Pereira, and there has been some talk about Bruno Lage over the past 24 hours.

It has been a chaotic past few days for Wolves, who are now looking for a new man to hopefully come in and save the club from relegation.

Wolves are in a world of trouble right now, and Vitor Pereira’s position had become untenable.

Under the Portuguese this season, the team has had no identity and nothing he has tried has stuck.

The problems at Wolves, of course, run much deeper than Pereira. But he must accept that he fell way short of expectations this season, and he was also at the forefront of the club’s recruitment in the summer.

Since his sacking, there was a big focus on Gary O’Neil potentially coming back to Wolves for a second spell.

But O’Neil withdrew from the race to be the next Wolves manager, feeling it was not the right moment to return.

He is not the only former Wolves manager to be linked with the job though, with Bruno Lage’s name now cropping up.

Lage had 16 months as manager of Wolves from the summer of 2021 to October 2022.

As has been the case with several managers at Wolves under Fosun, he started really brightly before falling away.

In the end, he was sacked for poor results – but that has not stopped there being speculation about him replacing Pereira.

Portuguese outlet Record had reported that links to Lage have been gathering momentum, but talkSPORT’s chief transfer correspondent Alex Crook has dismissed the talk on X this morning with there seemingly being no interest from the club.

He said: “Told reports linking Wolves with a return for Bruno Lage are wide of the mark.”

Talking Wolves have also reported that Lage ‘would not be interested’ in returning as manager.

Lage has been out of work since getting sacked by Benfica in September, following an embarrassing defeat to Azerbaijani minnows Qarabag FK. Jose Mourinho was brought in as his replacement.

Wolves could do worse than re-hiring Bruno Lage

So it sounds like there is little to no chance of Lage actually coming back, even though he’s still a client of Jorge Mendes.

But if Wolves did go down that route it would not be the worst decision.

People forget that Lage had Wolves paying some really good football midway through his first season as manager, and he was also getting points on the board. He also got some real scalps, beating the likes of Newcastle United, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Bruno Lage record at Wolves (2021-2022)
Games managed – 51
Wins – 19
Draws – 9
Losses – 23
Goals scored – 54
Goals conceded – 59

Around February, Lage still had Wolves in contention for European football, before the team’s form then took a dip.

Perhaps there would be an element of unfinished business if he came back, and no doubt he will have learned a lot since he left Molineux.
