Wolves set to face shock raid for Vitor Pereira as European giants target Portuguese manager

Vitor Pereira has worked wonders for Wolves since being appointed.

Taking over the managerial reins in December with the club second-bottom in the Premier League table, the Portuguese manager oversaw a complete transformation of Wolves’ form.

Such was the improvement, Pereira was rightly nominated for Manager of the Season, earning plaudits from across the board for guiding the club to safety.

Unfortunately for fans of the Old Gold, however, the improvements the 56-year-old has made mean other clubs are now sniffing around, with one in particular targeting Pereira as their next managerial appointment.

Benfica make Vitor Pereira their number one target to replace Bruno Lage

According to Sport Witness, as originally reported by Portuguese outlet Correio de Manha, Benfica are not 100% behind current boss and former Wolves manager Bruno Lage.

Should they decide to part ways with Lage, Vitor Pereira is deemed to be their number one choice to take over at the Estadio da Luz.

Having lost some of his key players at Molineux, and with Benfica competing at the top of the Portuguese League, these advances might prove to be too strong to resist for Pereira.

That being said, Lage still has the Club World Cup to prove himself. A strong run in that tournament could see the Benfica board change their opinion and decide to stick with him for the foreseeable future.

Moreover, the 49-year-old was close to winning the domestic title this season, missing out by two points to Sporting Lisbon on the final day of the season.

It might therefore take a complete collapse in Benfica’s performances at the Club World Cup for the club to decide to make a change.

Fosun must back Vitor Pereira with activity in the transfer market

Of course, Pereira could also be persuaded to stay at the club. The former Porto manager has already built a strong connection with the Wolves fans, endearing himself off the pitch by celebrating Wolves’ victories with pub visits.

The best way to go about ensuring he isn’t lured away is for the Wolves ownership to properly back him in the summer window.

This point has become even more important after Manchester United signed Matheus Cunha and Manchester City moved for Rayan Ait-Nouri, two of Wolves’ best players.

With those two sales generating nearly £100m, however, the club are now well placed to reinvest in the Wolves squad.

Being linked with Fernando Lopez from Celta Vigo is a good start, but more must be done to ensure there is no way Pereira will be tempted away from the club.
