Wolves will host Liverpool in the FA Cup fifth round at Molineux.

The tie, scheduled for the weekend of 7th March, promises to be a thrilling encounter at Molineux, where the home side will hope to replicate past successes against the Reds.

It’s a draw that may bring back fond memories for Wolves fans, who have seen their side progress against Liverpool in this competition twice in the last decade.

Victories in 2017 and 2019 will still be fresh in the minds of the Old Gold faithful, and there’s hope that Rob Edwards’ men can pull off another memorable upset.

Wolves got themselves into the fifth round draw after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Grimsby Town in the fourth round, courtesy of a goal from Santiago Bueno.

The question on everyone’s mind now is whether Wolves can rise to the occasion once more, against a side many levels above in quality.

Wolves’ history in the FA Cup is rich with storied encounters, and the club’s record against Liverpool adds another layer of intrigue to this upcoming fixture.

While Liverpool may have had the upper hand in the most recent FA Cup meeting three years ago, the Wolves camp will be buoyed by their previous triumphs.

Rob Edwards will understand the importance of this fixture for both the club and its supporters. The Wolves boss will undoubtedly be looking to spring an upset.

It’s been a disastrous Premier League campaign from Wolves, but how nice it would be if the club managed to win the FA Cup for the fifth time in their history against all odds.

Key battles on the pitch: midfield and defence

The clash with Liverpool will present Wolves with several intriguing battles across the pitch.

The midfield tussle should be a key area where the game could be won or lost. Wolves will need to be at their combative best to disrupt Liverpool’s rhythm and prevent the likes of Dominic Szoboszlai and Florian Wirtz from exerting their influence.

The likelihood is that Joao Gomes and Andre will both start to try and nullify and suppress their counterparts.

Although the game is at home, Liverpool should have the lion’s share of possession, meaning the backline will need to be solid against the likes of Mo Salah, Cody Gakpo and Hugo Ekitike, who has shone in his first season in England.

One man who’s bound to start is Santiago Bueno, who received big praise from Edwards after his fine performance against Grimsby.

It will be a tall order for Wolves. But given Liverpool’s inconsistency this season there is most definitely an outside chance of victory.
