Wolves receive Yerson Mosquera injury update from Colombia as greater fear still looms

Wolves are in a difficult situation at the start of the 2024/25 season, with matters not made easier by the latest injury update.

After showing encouraging signs over the 2023/24 calendar, Gary O’Neil’s side are struggling to make their presence known this term.

Five games have been played in the Premier League and Wolves have just one point on the board, seeing the Old Gold sit bottom of the table with four losses and one draw.

Last time out, O’Neil’s squad suffered a late defeat to Aston Villa in the West Midlands derby, with there an even greater concern coming from the fixture besides the result.

Wolves receive Yerson Mosquera injury update

In the 82nd minute, Wolves were forced to withdraw Yerson Mosquera at Villa Park as the Colombian was challenged by Morgan Rogers.

The centre-back was seen in great discomfort and distress as he was stretchered off the field, with injury experts spotting a possible ACL injury.

Now, an fresh update has emerged from Colombia to echo the experts’ belief, with an even greater fear still looming.

Colombian journalist Edward Acero took to X to relay that Mosquera ‘has suffered’ an MCL injury, with there still concerns that he might have also sustained an ACL blow.

“Yerson Mosquera has suffered an injury to the medial collateral ligament and it is feared that there is a compromise of the cruciate ligament in his left knee. He will miss his call-up to the national team.”

As Wolves wait to learn just how long they will be without the Colombia international, there will be prayers for the player and the club that an ACL injury has not occurred.

How do Wolves cope without Mosquera?

Mosquera performed well against Villa before suffering his injury, with Wolves conceding two goals after his departure to see the game lost.

Since arriving back in England after spending the 2023/24 campaign on loan, the centre-back has certainly grown into his role under O’Neil, starting every Premier League game so far.

O’Neil now has a tremendous task to attempt to replace Mosquera, with the squad already incredibly low on central defenders following the summer transfer window.

Wolves sold Max Kilman and failed to replace him, with Mosquera, Craig Dawson, Santi Bueno and Toti Gomes standing alone as the club’s alternative options.

With Mosquera set to spend some time on the sidelines, O’Neil is left with only three centre-backs, reinforcing the mistake to not recruit another defender during the summer.
