Wolves players now told what they should do with Gary O’Neil amid ‘serious trouble’ claim

Wolves supporters knew it would be a tough start to the season, but few would have foreseen quite such a worrying situation after seven Premier League games.

Wolves are bottom of the table having taken just one point so far. The club also went out of the Carabao Cup last month at the hands of Brighton.

Against Brentford on Saturday, Wolves crashed to a 5-3 defeat at the Gtech Community Stadium.

It was a shambolic defensive performance and after the game, O’Neil admitted it was his worst game as a manager.

Despite such a horrible display from the team, O’Neil is reportedly still backed by the Wolves board, and will be given time to turn things around.

For pundit Shay Given, it’s right that he’s given more time, as he explained why the situation isn’t entirely his fault.

The former Premier League goalkeeper has admitted that Wolves are in ‘serious trouble’.

However, after Alan Shearer pointed to key Wolves players leaving, Given also has sympathy for O’Neil. He believes the sales of Pedro Neto and Max Kilman really haven’t helped the manager.

He said on The Kelly and Wrighty Show: “I feel for him (Gary O’Neil) as well because he had to sell Neto in the summer, probably their best attacking player, Kilman, their best defender, and the windows before they have had to sell and sell as well.

“I know they brought a few players in, but it’s frustrating for him because he just signed a new contract in the summer.

“I think they should support him, they should back him and trust him that they will get them, they are in serious trouble, but back him to get out of that trouble.”

O’Neil needs points on the board

Fans are growing increasingly concerned, and recent reports that the Wolves board is backing the manager for now have not gone down well with everyone.

O’Neil now really needs to start getting points on the board.

It is a tricky next couple of games though. Manchester City are the next opponents at Molineux, and then it’s Brighton away.

But Wolves then have four more forgiving fixtures on paper. The month of November will be huge, with Crystal Palace, Southampton, Fulham and Bournemouth all to come.

Undoubtedly, this period will be defining for O’Neil.

The next two games are very tough again. But the four in November are genuine chances to get points on the board. If he doesn’t get a decent tally, the board may well change their stance.
