Wolves player who nearly left during summer transfer window now set to sign new two-year contract

Wolves are working hard to get their squad in order for the season ahead, even after the closure of the summer transfer window.

It was an eventful summer for those at Compton, as Wolves saw players come and go.

Today, it was announced that Daniel Podence had departed, ending his five-year association with the Midlands club to embark on a new path in Saudi Arabia.

Podence wasn’t the only player to exit Molineux this summer and certainly wasn’t the only figure expected to leave Gary O’Neil’s side.

Wolves set to offer Dan Bentley a new contract

Throughout the summer, Dan Bentley’s future at Wolves was questioned as the goalkeeper was a suggested target of another Premier League club.

Arsenal wanted to sign Bentley however, after a rejected bid, the Gunners looked elsewhere, bringing in Bournemouth ‘keeper Neto on loan on deadline day.

During the summer transfer window, it looked certain that the Englishman’s future was going to be away from Wolves, as O’Neil and Matt Hobbs welcomed Sam Johnstone to the club from Crystal Palace.

Instead, the opposite is expected to happen, with Bentley’s position as Wolves’ second-choice shot-stopper not expected to change.

Today, talkSPORT reported that Wolves are preparing to trigger the option to extend Bentley’s contract by two years at Molineux.

The Englishman’s current contract at Wolves is set to expire at the end of the season, giving O’Neil and Hobbs a decision to make over his immediate future.

Bentley expected to usurp Jose Sa at Wolves

The most striking part of the report came in the form of what Bentley’s contract offer means for Jose Sa

While Sa is expected to stay at Wolves despite being left in a complicated situation in the summer due to interest from Saudi Arabia, the Portugal international is poised to slip down the pecking order.

According to talkSPORT, Bentley is ‘expected to be number two’ behind Johnstone and ahead of Sa, who has lost his way under O’Neil.

It’s a significant revelation following the drama that unfolded during the summer transfer window, as Bentley was expected to leave and join Arsenal, and Sa was regarded as the Old Gold’s firm number one.

With Johnstone already in line to be the manager’s first choice, it’s now clear that O’Neil’s mind is made up with regard to his pecking order between the sticks.
