Wolves on track to break abysmal Premier League record after winless start

After a shocking 5-3 defeat to Brentford, Wolves are now on track to break an unwanted Premier League record.

Gary O’Neil just cannot buy a win at Wolves. After seven Premier League games, the club remains bottom with just one point.

The defeat against Brentford was arguably their worst performance yet, with four goals shipped at half-time.

With no end to the poor form in sight, Wolves are now faced with the real possibility of getting relegated this season.

One big factor which has contributed to this form is Wolves’ defence, with one terrible Premier League on track to be broken by the Old Gold.

Wolves’ backline has been nothing short of appalling so far this campaign. The club is yet to keep a clean sheet after seven games with the defence being the biggest issue so far.

This continued against Brentford, with the visitors shipping another five goals in a shambolic display.

As a result, Wolves have now shipped 21 goals so far in the Premier League, leaving the club with a -12 goal difference.

On average, O’Neil has got his side conceding at least three a game, which is on track to beat the Premier League record for goals conceded.

In the 2023/24 campaign, Sheffield United broke this record after shipping 104 goals. If Wolves stick at their current rate, they will beat this by 10, conceding 114.

Wolves’ baffling decision not to replace Max Kilman inevitably comes back to haunt them

At the back end of the 2023/24 campaign, Wolves’ defence was in a mess. The club could not keep a clean sheet which resulted in an unacceptable run of form which has continued into this campaign.

Therefore, when Max Kilman left for West Ham, it was widely expected that multiple centre-halves would come in.

Yet, Matt Hobbs decided not to replace Kilman, and now the club is paying the price for this incompetence.

With Wolves without a clean sheet in their last 17 Premier League games, it is hard to imagine that this will improve soon, and the Old Gold only have themselves to blame.
