Wolves midfielder Tommy Doyle sends strong message to Gary O’Neil, it’s ‘disappointing’

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil has a lot to fix at Molineux after a dreadful start to the 2024/25 season.

The Englishman impressed during his first campaign at the club, taking the reins from Julen Lopetegui last summer.

O’Neil led Wolves to a point and goal improvement on Lopetegui’s final term in charge however, standards have since dropped considerably.

After seven games in the 2024/25 Premier League calendar, the Old Gold sit bottom of the table with just one point to their name, giving the manager a lot to think about.

Tommy Doyle unhappy with lack of minutes at Wolves

Aside from the current inability to win matches, O’Neil has pressure mounting around him amid Wolves’ poor form.

The manager’s job is under the microscope as he juggles everything going wrong at Molineux at present.

While it’s understood that O’Neil still has the backing of the dressing room, one player has expressed his wish to play more for the Old Gold.

In quotes relayed by Express and Star, Tommy Doyle opened up about his potential while mentioning his disappointment over his lack of minutes this term.

“You can always improve, whether that’s me speaking now or speaking in 10 years, I know the level I can get to, so that’s why I work every day,” Doyle said.

“Minutes have been varied and obviously that’s disappointing, but that’s part of being a footballer.

“You might not always get what you want, so you have to make sure that every single day you give everything to make sure you get into the team.”

While the Englishman’s mentality remains positive as he aims to feature more for O’Neil’s side, it’s understandable why the former Manchester City starlet is frustrated at not being able to contribute more.

Gary O’Neil will have a struggle to utilise Doyle

It’s a difficult time to be a midfielder outside of Wolves’ favoured XI, as the middle of the park is arguably the only position that O’Neil is sufficiently stocked in.

After welcoming Andre in the summer from Fluminense, the manager tweaked his formation, seeing the Brazilian join Mario Lemina and Joao Gomes to form a midfield trio.

If it wasn’t difficult enough for Doyle to find a way into the starting XI, adding a player of Andre’s calibre to the mix did not help.

Still, the £4m signing has all the talent, potential and hunger to make it work at Wolves as he continues to wait patiently for his chance to impress.
