Wolves managerial target Julen Lopetegui confirms he has left Sevilla

Julen Lopetegui has confirmed tonight that he has left Sevilla.

The 56-year-old has taken charge of his final game for the Spanish club, which ended in defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

It had been widely reported that Lopetegui’s fate had already been decided.

Sevilla officials left him in charge for tonight’s game though, feeling it would not be right to make the change on the eve of a big game.

Lopetegui was unable to inspire his side at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, with Dortmund running out 4-1 winners.

After the game, an emotional Lopetegui went out onto the pitch and applauded the home fans, with his players applauding him.

According to Get Spanish Football News, he was heading for the dressing room, but the club’s sporting director Monchi brought him out so he could get an ovation.

And after the game, Lopetegui has now confirmed that he will not be Sevilla’s manager from tomorrow.

It has been reported in recent days that Jorge Sampaoli will succeed him.

So Lopetegui’s time at Sevilla has indeed come to an end. The club have also now confirmed he has left.

It was interesting to note the reaction from the Sevilla supporters to him at the end of tonight’s game.

They reacted warmly and showed their appreciation, and it is clear many respect him for the job he has done overall.

Lopetegui appears to have just come to the end of his cycle at the club.

It now remains to be seen if Wolves can land their supposed top managerial target. Reports in recent days indicate there is a good chance.
