Wolves make wrong kind of history vs Crystal Palace, now third in unwanted English top-flight stat

Wolves’ winless run extended to 12 games in the Premier League as Rob Edwards’ first game in charge ended in a 2-0 loss.

It was a tough day at the office for the Old Gold, and while Adam Wharton offered an optimistic perspective for Wolves, that may not soothe the disappointment fans felt.

There are still 26 games to go, and anything can happen, but frankly, the start to the season has offered little hope so far.

Relegation is staring Wolves right in the face, and the time to turn it around is quickly dissolving right in front of their eyes.

And now just how bad that start has been is put into perspective with this latest stat.

Wolves’ start to season is the third worst in English top-flight history

Rob Edwards has been handed a tough job, but it was not like it came as a surprise to him. He knew the role he had undertaken, and yet he was still excited to come back to Wolves.

While his first match did not go how he wanted, it has left the Wanderers ranked high on a list they will not want to be on.

The other 11 matches were not his fault, but it does highlight the level of task at hand for him.

According to the Premier League, Wolves’ two points from 12 games are the third-fewest in top-flight history after 12 games, behind Man Utd in 1930/31 (zero) and Sheffield United in 2020/21 (one).

How many points will Wolves end up on this season?

In both instances, those sides were relegated.

It does paint a stark picture for the club. The record is not only during the Premier League, but it is throughout the entirety of English top-flight history.

Derby fans will now start paying closer attention to Wolves

It does not feel ridiculous to now think that Wolves could seriously end up doing worse than that infamous 11-point total by Derby in the 2007/2008 season.

At the pace the Old Gold are currently going this season, they are on course for an embarrassing total of just six points.

And the Opta supercomputer, while more generous, still has Wolves breaking that record.

The form has to simply turn around soon. Even if surviving relegation eventually falls away, the club needs to avoid becoming a infamous side like the Rams have been for 17 years.

It is not something they will want to be remembered by.
