Wolves lose long-term employee as Rangers rebuild after Russell Martin exit

Rangers have been making a lot of changes to their staff, most notably Russell Martin being sacked as manager, but their latest shake-up has come at the cost to Wolves.

There are a couple of connections between the Glasgow club and the Old Gold at the moment.

Nasser Djiga was sent to the Gers on loan, but the Burkinabe’s move has not been fruitful for either side.

Additionally, Rangers sporting director Kevin Thelwell once held the same role at Molineux.

However, he has now got one over on his former employers with his latest move.

Jonathan Hunter-Barrett set to join Rangers as academy manager

Jonathan Hunter-Barrett has been a Wolves employee for 14 years, but his time at the club has come to an end, according to the Express and Star.

The academy manager is joining Rangers after Kevin Thelwell has convinced him of the move up North.

Hunter-Barrett is set to take charge of the Scottish club’s youth system.

The outgoing employee is serving his notice period at Wolves, so the Old Gold have plenty of time to find a replacement for their academy.

According to the Wolves Academy website, the role involves being ‘responsible for all of the performance-related activities of the academy, such as coaching/club philosophy, coach and player development, team identity, culture and environment.’

Wolves academy must be trusted more

Losing out on Jonathan Hunter-Barrett is a big blow due to the experience and relationships he has built at the club.

The academy of any club is extremely important, and the Old Gold must make the correct appointment for this department.

There have been some big names come out of the club, including Robbie Keane, with the Irishman becoming Ireland’s top goalscorer.

Most recently, Morgan Gibbs-White was a product of Wolves’ youth set-up, and Hugo Bueno has come through the younger age groups.

However, the Englishman is the only example in recent history to have fully developed at Compton Park Academy and become a genuine first-team player.

There is talent within the club, and it would be wise for Vitor Pereira to use it. Mateus Mane is one of many players hoping to be given a chance.
