Wolves loanee Nigel Lonwijk set for exciting new role under an Arsenal legend

With a lack of first-team opportunities available, Wolves sent Nigel Lonwijk on loan to Luton Town, and the defender looks set to feature in a new role.

The Old Gold loanee is already a versatile player and has played at both centre-back and wing-back this season for the Hatters.

However, similar to Wolves, Jack Wilshere has come into Luton and changed from a back three to a back four.

This has set the player up to potentially feature in another position this season for the League One club.

Since Jack Wilshere took over at Luton, Nigel Lonwijk has not had the chance to impress due to injury.

He has missed their last four fixtures, with a fifth being a postponement.

However, he is now available for selection again, and his new manager was speaking about him ahead of playing Northampton.

Wilshere was full of praise for the Wolves man and highlighted his key attributes that could mean he would make a good full-back option.

The former Arsenal man said via Luton Today, “Nigel, I think, can [play at full-back].”

“Nigel for me is a ball-playing centre back. He’s comfortable in possession; a lot of the time when I saw his games before, he played as a wide centre back, so the centre backs split a lot of the time.

“He’s stepping in in that right-sided position; he’s got a good passing range, he can make longer passes, and he can connect the ball inside, so yes, there probably will be a stage of the season when he plays there.”

Whether Lonwijk is deemed good enough to return and play for Wolves next season is still to be determined, but being a versatile option is a trait that nearly every manager will be excited about, and it will only improve his chances of doing so.

Nigel Lonwijk yet to feature for Wolves

Despite being at Wolves since 2021, Lonwijk has never been given a chance to showcase his talent in the Old Gold.

He has zero first-team appearances for the club. Ever since joining, his spell has consisted of multiple loan deals away from Molineux.

Additionally, his loans have mostly been at the League One level, with one being in the Swiss League for Grasshoppers and his first being in the Eredivisie.

They are not the kind of loans you would expect for a player who is set to feature for the first team anytime soon.

However, every player has a different trajectory, and he could still surprise a few yet.
