Wolves loanee in form, already has five assists this season

Wolverhampton Wanderers will be delighted with Theo Corbeanu as he continues to impress on loan at Grasshoppers.

The Wolves influence at Grasshoppers has been clear for a while now.

There has been something of a strategic partnership between the two clubs, aided by the respective ownerships.

We have now seen a raft of Wolves players head to Switzerland, with Ming-yang Yang, Renat Dadashov, Connor Ronan, Toti, Leo Bonatini, Oskar Buur, Christian Here, Leonardo Campana, Hayao Kawabe, Bendeguz Bolla, Jeong Sang-bin and Meritan Shabani all making the move.

Seyi Olofinjana became the club’s sporting director in 2021 but has since left the club, whilst Matt Jackson – former Wolves ‘strategic player marketing manager’ – is now the Grasshoppers club president.

Theo Corbeanu shining for Grasshoppers

The link between the two clubs is clear for all to see and more Wolves players have headed to Zurich this season.

Defender Nigel Lonwijk has joined on loan and has been joined by winger Theo Corbeanu.

Snapped up from Toronto FC in 2018, the Canadian has only managed one first-team appearance for Wolves.

Now in his fifth loan spell away from Wolves, Corbeanu needs to shine – and he is taking his chance.

The 21-year-old picked up two assists in a 2-1 Grasshoppers win over Lugano on Sunday despite only being on the pitch for 25 minutes.

That’s now five assists in just 11 Super League games for Corbeanu, who has also chipped in with one goal.

This is the kind of form Corbeanu needed, whether it’s to break through at Wolves or land a permanent move elsewhere…

My view: Corbeanu still unlikely to break through at Wolves

The wide man has blown hot and cold in his loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday, Milton Keynes Dons, Blackpool and Arminia Bielefeld.

Loans can be tricky for young players and it’s now imperative that Corbeanu settles down.

Corbeanu would love to become a star at Wolves but breaking into a Premier League side isn’t easy.

Wolves also have quality out wide with Hwang Hee-chan and Pedro Neto in fine form this season.

Wolves will love Corbeanu’s form but we still think that he will need to move on for good in 2024 in order to progress his career.
