Wolves’ interest in Renato Veiga will surely have ‘incredible’ Molineux star worried

Wolves have been very shaky defensively this season.

Currently, Wanderers have the worst defensive record in the Premier League having shipped a whopping 45 goals in 20 games so far.

Wolves came into the new season having not replaced Max Kilman, who joined West Ham United for £40 million.

Initially, former manager Gary O’Neil started the season by playing Yerson Mosquera and Toti Gomes as a pairing.

After Mosquera got injured, O’Neil went to a back three, and played Craig Dawson, Santiago Bueno and Toti all at once.

Toti has been heavily utilised this season, but has struggled for the most part. And Wolves could now be able to do something that could hurt his starting prospects.

Renato Veiga transfer would be bad news for Wolves star Toti Gomes

It’s been reported that Wolves are interested in a potential deal to sign Renato Veiga.

Veiga has struggled for regular starts at Chelsea since joining them in the summer, and may be in line for an early exit from the club.

That said, a loan move is probably more likely for the Portugal international.

Wolves fans have thrown their backing behind a move for Veiga, and it’ll be interesting to see if Matt Hobbs and his team decide to make a push.

The move would not be good news for Toti, with Veiga able to operate as a centre-back or a left-back. As per a feature from Breaking The Lines, ‘Veiga is capable of operating as the left-sided center back in a back three thanks to his ability to progress play via his ball-carrying and passing, but he’d also able to fit in as a left back in multiple roles’.

The publication also stated that Veiga has ‘powerful running and aerial dominance’, two traits that can also be associated with Toti.

Toti could lose prominence at Wolves in 2025

Wolves signing Veiga would hand Toti a direct threat to his minutes.

Wolves will also sign Emmanuel Agbadou this season, which means further competition for Wolves’ number 24, although the Ivorian would like play on the right side. But it’s still another defensive recruit.

It could well be that Toti – whom Troy Deeney branded ‘a car crash’ after Wolves’ first game of the season against Arsenal – ends up losing prominence at Molineux in 2025, with Yerson Mosquera set to return from injury in the summer.

It will be interesting to see if Vitor Pereira will look to change his position if Rayan Ait-Nouri is sold in the summer.

Many have suggested that Toti actually plays better as a left-back, and so that could be a more regular position going forward for him in 2025/26.

Toti was a player O’Neil branded ‘incredible’ last season, and the 25-year-old was a favourite of the former manager. But minutes may end up being harder to come by under Pereira.
