Wolves ‘in talks’ to sign ex-Villa man, who Emi Martinez says is the ‘best’

Wolves are said to be in discussions to sign ex-Aston Villa coach Neil Cutler, following the departure of Tony Roberts who is AC Milan bound.

Old Gold are set to be short a goalkeeping coach with current man Roberts said to be ‘imminently’ formalising his departure to Milan.

Roberts joined Wolves in July 2021, but now seems set to depart as he enters his third season at the Black Country club.

The Welsh coach will however remain in his Welsh FA role as the national teams goalkeeping coach, while he seeks pastures new on the continent.

Joining up with European powerhouses AC Milan is on the agenda to work with the supremely talented Frenchman Mike Maignan.

Roberts has been a figure around British football for years, and is formerly of Arsenal.

Cutler to become Wolves’ new coach

With the departure of Roberts, Wolves would find themselves without a goalkeeping coach and have moved quickly to rectify that.

According to Mail Online, talks are being held between Wolves chiefs and former Aston Villa coach, Cutler.

The Englishman left Villa last October upon Unai Emery’s arrival as the Spaniard opted to bring his own man to take charge.

This was a blow to both Cutler and his number one priority at the club in Emi Martinez.

Upon his departure, Martinez claimed football had been ‘unfair’ on Cutler who he described as the ‘best English coach by miles’, as reported by Mail Online.

The Argentine is a top class keeper, and therefore if he rates Cutler, so do we he is the ideal Roberts replacement.

His career to date

Cutler prior to his coaching career, had an impressive playing career, gracing 11 clubs in his 18 year career.

The most notable clubs he played for were Aston Villa, Stoke and West Brom along with Swansea and Bury.

It is in his coaching career though that he found his calling.

Beginning his career in 2007 at Bury, a role which later become a player-coach role, where he would remain until 2011.

He would then sent two years at Scunthorpe United before joining Walsall in 2013.

He remained there for five years, before a brief spell at the Hawthorns with West Brom earned him a chance at Villa.

Joining Villa in 2018 he stayed right through until 2022 when Emery joined, he now looks set to join Wolves at the Molineux.
