Wolves hit stumbling block over Matheus Cunha’s new contract

Wolves have hit a potential stumbling block over Matheus Cunha’s new contract with the Old Gold.

The January transfer window has already been a busy period for the Molineux side.

Wolves are expected to sign Emmanuel Agbadou soon to help reinforce their leaky backline.

Mario Lemina also looks likely to depart Wolves with Saudi Arabia touted as a potential destination.

However, what would no doubt be the signing of the window would be if Vitor Pereira can tie Cunha down to a new deal.

It was reported that Cunha was close to signing a new contract with Wolves but this has now been delayed.

Cunha has easily been Wolves’ best player this season. The Brazilian has netted 10 times in 19 Premier League matches and has picked up four assists.

As a result, multiple teams are looking to sign the attacker. Both Man United and Arsenal have been linked with Cunha ahead of a potential move.

Now, this speculation is seemingly delaying the Brazilian from signing a new deal with the Old Gold.

According to Sky Sports, Cunha is still considering his options before he signs a new deal with Wolves.

After discussions over a long-term deal, sources have suggested that there is still work to be done to come to an agreement.

It is no secret that without Cunha this season, Wolves would be in deep trouble.

Under Gary O’Neil, the attacker was the club’s only bright spark and won points on his own.

His performances on the pitch are proof that Cunha should be playing for a team near the top of the table rather than one circling the relegation zone.

Therefore, if Fosun is still committed to Wolves being a serious club, it needs to ensure that assets like Cunha are tied down long-term.

If the Old Gold are relegated this season, a new deal could also mean that the club gets more money out of a potential sale.
