Wolves gear up for FA Cup showdown with Grimsby as Rob Edwards considers changes

Wolves are gearing up for their FA Cup clash against Grimsby Town, hoping to inject some much-needed momentum into their faltering season.

The Old Gold played out a goalless draw against Nottingham Forest in their last Premier League game, and an FA Cup win to lift spirits and spark a turnaround.

Wolves’ league form has been dreadful in 2025/26, with just a single win in their last 26 Premier League matches. But the FA Cup offers a different narrative, one where Rob Edwards’ side can reset and refocus.

The Old Gold have a decent track record against Grimsby in this competition, having progressed from three of their four previous ties against the Mariners.

Grimsby, however, are not to be underestimated. The League Two side are riding an 11-match unbeaten streak in all competitions and have already shown they can topple Premier League giants, having toppled Manchester United in the Carabao Cup earlier this season.

Wolves need to be at their best to avoid becoming Grimsby’s next top-flight scalp.

Manager Rob Edwards is likely to make some changes to his starting eleven for the trip to Blundell Park. With the league campaign struggling, the FA Cup is a chance to experiment and find a winning formula.

Edwards will still be without Hwang Hee-chan and Toti Gomes due to injury, but there is hope that André, who trained on Friday, could feature.

The manager has hinted at a more attacking approach, with wing-backs pushing high and quick transitions aimed at breaking down what’s expected to be a compact Grimsby defence.

The onus will be on players like Adam Armstrong and Tolu Arokodare to find the back of the net, something Wolves have struggled with this season.

Their movement and ability to exploit spaces will be crucial if Wolves want to avoid another frustrating outing.

And it’s not out of the question that we could see youngsters Tom Edozie, Ethan Sutherland or Luke Rawlings get some minutes, after they were all on the bench in midweek.

Grimsby’s giant-killing credentials

Grimsby Town, under the stewardship of David Artell, have already proven they can mix it with the best. Artell is relishing the prospect of another Premier League team visiting Blundell Park, and he knows his side must be at their best to cause another upset.

“It’s another fantastic day ahead for the club and the town as a whole,” Artell said (via Grimsby Telegraph), highlighting the excitement surrounding the fixture.

Wolves must be wary of the Mariners’ resilience and their ability to thrive in the underdog role. Grimsby have already shown they can handle the pressure of playing against higher-ranked teams, and with a full house expected, the atmosphere should be electric.

Wolves must go for it in the FA Cup

Given how disastrous Wolves’ league campaign has been, many fans are hoping there can be a genuine push in the FA Cup.

Relegation is all but certain now, but the FA Cup remains an opportunity for Wolves to finish the season with something to smile about.

Edwards therefore should be trying to go as strong as possible today.
