Wolves full-back Rayan Ait-Nouri set to declare for Algeria

Wolves defender Rayan Ait-Nouri is reportedly set to change his nationality to Algeria.

According to France 24 (via DZ Foot), the youngster is changing to represent the African nation, as is Houssem Aouar of Lyon.

The youngster is hoping to be given the green light in time for him to be selected for the upcoming friendly match against Sweden on November 19.

Algeria will not be playing at the World Cup in Qatar having failed to qualify for the finals.

Their focus is instead on the AFCON qualifiers, which start in January.

In recent months, Ait-Nouri had been mentioned as a potential soon-to-be full France internantional.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a really good season with Wanderers in 2021/22, finishing the campaign strongly.

But he has struggled a bit for form this season, as have most of his teammates at Molineux.

And recently, he lost his place in the starting XI to Hugo Bueno, who has excelled at left-back.

Ait-Nouri – who was born in Montreuil – has previously represented France at U21 level.

He is following the example of former Wolves defender Willy Boly, who is French but declared for the Ivory Coast in 2020.

A big decision from Rayan Ait-Nouri with Wolves star set to represent Algeria

So Ait-Nouri is opting to switch his allegiance to represent Algeria.

This is an interesting decision, but one that is understandable.

The French national team is very difficult to break into. It is a nation that has many top players, and that will likely always be the way.

Ait-Nouri has huge potential, and stands to become a top player himself.

But perhaps he feels that there is more of a chance to play regularly with Algeria. Simply playing international football on a regular basis is an attractive proposition for many players.
