Wolves fringe player is publicly knocking on Vitor Pereira’s door, he wants an ‘important role’ this season

One Wolves squad player who impressed last season intends to do the same this campaign.

Wolves are bracing themselves for changes in the goalkeeper position as interest from Burnley and Sunderland in Sam Johnstone continues to grow.

The second-choice goalkeeper is an attractive option for either promoted side, commanding an £8 million fee.

Wolves have been well-equipped in the goalkeeping department in recent seasons and will not struggle for depth even with the potential departure of Sam Johnstone. Jose Sa looks set to hold onto his spot in the starting XI, while another fan-favourite seeks to cement himself as the second choice, and possibly give Vitor Pereira a selection headache.

Dan Bentley wants to play more minutes for Wolves this season

Dan Bentley has been a loyal servant to Wolves since joining from Bristol City in 2023. The 32-year-old has made just nine appearances since arriving at Molineux, struggling to climb up the pecking order.

But, when he has been called upon, he has not let the fans down. Bentley’s performance against Manchester United earned him praise from the Wolves supporters for a solid performance on such short notice.

Now Bentley is eyeing the 2025/26 season as an opportunity to make an impact. In an interview with Liam Keen for the Express and Star, the English stopper was asked what success looks like next season.

Ever the team player, Bentley responds: “Part of my answer is going to be the team to be successful and me to be a part of that team. If I can have an important role in that team, then perfect for me.

“As long as I keep performing in training and doing as much as I can to keep myself in that space, in that environment, then the best scenario for me would be to play as many games as possible.”

But Bentley is wary of the beginning of the campaign, and has previously emphasised the importance of Wolves not peaking too early in pre-season. Hopefully, we can see him included in what’s left of the pre-season action.

The latest with Sam Johnstone as Burnley and Sunderland circle

Burnley have reportedly joined Sunderland in the pursuit of Wolves’ second-choice keeper, Sam Johnstone. The 32-year-old is seeking an opportunity to be number one choice at a Premier League side, something both newly promoted clubs can offer.

With James Trafford leaving Turf Moor for a £27 million fee, the Clarets will be urgently looking to fill that void before matchday one.

With the knowledge that Burnley have cash from the Trafford deal, there may be some back-and-forth over the fee, which has teetered between £8 and £10 million.

Wolves can be reassured that in the case of Johnstone’s departure, they have a second option who is ready and willing to do whatever the team needs to win.
