Wolves footage hints at Matheus Cunha injury return ahead of Aston Villa clash

Wolves could be handed a significant boost ahead of their Premier League fixture against Aston Villa, as footage has now teased that Matheus Cunha is nearing a return.

It’s been a difficult month on the injury front for Gary O’Neil however, the Wolves boss could have his squad bolstered ahead of the Old Gold’s trip to Villa Park.

Wolves take on Aston Villa on Saturday evening in a game that both sides will be desperate to win, with European football still on the cards as the Premier League season nears the home straight.

The stage is set for the two Midlands clubs to go to battle in Birmingham, with both squads jaded due to key absences.

Wolves have had a difficult time with injuries

While Villa have suffered three ACL injuries to key players this season, Wolves have had to battle the campaign with a shortened squad from the off.

O’Neil has had his resources stretched throughout the 2023/24 calendar, with numbers hitting a new low over the past month, particularly when it comes to the attack.

Against Coventry City in the FA Cup, Pablo Sarabia was the only first-team forward available for the tie, seeing 19-year-old Nathan Fraser lead the line and midfielder Mario Lemina start on the flank.

With Hwang Hee-chan and Pedro Neto to miss the Villa clash, the manager will need to find quick answers to whom he can find goals from, with one name on the horizon of a potential return.

Matheus Cunha returning would be a boost for Wolves

After almost two months out of action, Matheus Cunha is nearing the end of his recovery from the hamstring blow he sustained against Brentford at the start of February.

Before his injury, the Brazilian was in searing form, contributing to a remarkable 10 goals in the eight games prior to the Bee’s visit to Molineux.

Now, the 24-year-old could return to action on Saturday, with Wolves’ official media team providing a hint that the famed forward could be nearing contention for the derby.

Yesterday, Wolves Tweeted the above video of Cunha in training with an emoji of an hourglass, suggesting that his time on the sidelines is almost up.

In the video, the explosive Brazil international was seen in good spirits jogging in his training gear and saying “ready to run” in response to goalkeeper Dan Bentley asking if he was “back”.

Lauded as “world-class” for his ability by former Wolves striker Leo Bonatini, Cunha’s return will come as a huge boost for the Old Gold, at a time when the need for a spark of quality in the attack is essential.
