Wolves fans won’t have high hopes after official Premier League decision for Brighton fixture

Wolves have had their fair share of controversy surrounding VAR and referees, and the latest decision by the Premier League for their match against Brighton is sure to cause some upset.

The Old Gold have been struggling to get points on the board this season and sit on just one after six games.

The Wanderers could have had more points, as a panel revealed that VAR made a major mistake vs Everton.

However, they have also been on the side of good fortune. Two referees disagreed on a big decision against Newcastle that ultimately went Wolves’ way.

Additionally, a former player felt Wolves were lucky in the same situation, but that will not change supporters’ views of both VAR and referees in the Premier League.

Now, they have been handed an official decision that is sure to be unpopular.

Jarred Gillett named as referee for Wolves vs Brighton

The officials for this weekend’s fixtures have been revealed, and Wolves have been given a referee who is sure to be controversial among the fanbase.

Jarred Gillett has been selected to officiate Sunday’s clash against Brighton.

The Australian referee is an infamous figure among the Molineux faithful, with Gillett sending Mario Lemina off in 2023 for a bizarre reason.

Lemina, who was on a yellow card, ‘aggressively’ ran towards the referee, prompting Gillett to hand him a second yellow card.

It was a decision that angered the Wolves fanbase, and Gillett has since been a much-bemoaned official around the ground.

Additionally, Gillett is coming into the game after a controversial performance in Newcastle vs Arsenal, one which will not do the Old Gold’s confidence any good.

Gillett awarded Arsenal a penalty before later overturning it following VAR intervention and then did not give a penalty for a potential handball offence by Gabriel.

There were multiple talking points surrounding the referee and VAR at St James’ Park, and a lot of those dominated the headlines over the next few days.

Wolves will be hoping the referee will not be as front and centre on Sunday.

Wolves’ record with Jarred Gillett is poor

The last three Wolves games that Jarred Gillett officiated hold an ominous omen for the Wanderers.

They have lost each of the last three fixtures in which Gillett has been the referee.

The Australian was in charge for their first game this season against Manchester City, which resulted in a 4-0 loss.

Meanwhile, last season he officiated in Wolves’ 2-0 defeat to Arsenal and a 4-3 loss to Manchester United in the season before that.

There were no major controversial decisions in those games, which could provide some solace for fans, but the record will no doubt cause a little bit of worry, even if it does not mean too much.
