Wolves fans will surely fear the worst as rival manager now the shock favourite to replace Gary O’Neil

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil is hanging onto his job by a thread after his side were trounced 4-0 by Everton on Wednesday.

It’s a result that left Wolves 19th in the Premier League table with 36 goals conceded and just two wins to their name.

As a result, the fans are annoyed that Gary O’Neil hasn’t been sacked and rightfully so, with the 41-year-old walking on dangerously thin ice.

Rather embarrassingly, the Wolves board are prepared to give O’Neil the West Ham game but failure to win that would surely see him exit Molineux.

With the Englishman on the verge of losing his job, the Old Gold have lined up replacements, holding talks with Graham Potter and sounding out David Moyes as a potential candidate.

But, neither Moyes nor Potter want to work under Fosun, and now another name has emerged as the front-runner to replace O’Neil.

West Brom boss Carlos Corberan now the shock favourite to replace Gary O’Neil

Fosun has already been lambasted by the fans for their lack of ambition, selling their best players each transfer window and not sacking O’Neil.

Now, the fans could reach boiling point, as it’s been reported by Italian journalist Matteo Moretto that West Brom boss Carlos Corberan is now the front-runner to become the next manager of Wolves.

As revealed on X, the post reads: “Wolverhampton places Spanish Carlos Corberán at the top of their list of targets to replace Gary O’Neil, in the event that he is dismissed if they lose against West Ham on Monday.”

Wolves fans despise their rivals West Brom, and hiring the Baggies manager wouldn’t go down well at all with both fanbases.

This isn’t just because Corberan is seen as a rival in the eyes of Wanderers fans, but he also doesn’t have the credibility to drag Wolves to safety.

Wolves should never consider appointing Corberan

In terms of their self-sustainable model, Wolves are going to hit a stumbling block every time they attempt to hire a new manager.

Fosun isn’t prepared to release funds and back the manager, so for anyone highly reputable, the job is far from appealing, and that is before examining their position in the table.

If Corberan was at a different club, he’s someone who would be attainable as he aims to make the Premier League step up however, ignoring the rival bias, he wouldn’t be a good appointment.

The Old Gold need to hire someone who has a proven track record in the top flight or has at least managed at the highest level, and the Spaniard has done neither.

While Corberan has had the Baggies in and around the play-offs two years at the club, finishing fifth last term, he’s also been unable to get his side free-scoring with only 19 goals scored in 18 games.

His West Brom side may have conceded just 12 goals this term – the third best in the league – they’ve also drawn nine of their last 10 games.

In short, replacing O’Neil with Corberan would not only alienate the fanbase but could also put them at greater risk of relegation.
