Wolves fans think Matt Doherty has just absolutely nailed it as Rob Edwards era begins

Wolves fans are hoping a corner will be turned after the appointment of Rob Edwards – and some are praising Matt Doherty for his reaction.

Wanderers are languishing right at the bottom of the Premier League table having still not yet won a game.

It’s just two points taken from 11 games, and there is huge concern that Wolves could lose their top-flight status next year.

But Rob Edwards has come in as Vitor Pereira’s replacement, and the hope is that the club’s former defender and coach will be able to instigate a turnaround.

Wolves are said to feel as though Edwards can unite the club, but we’ll see if he is up to the task, because there are many issues for him to fix right now.

It will be paramount for Edwards to galvanise the squad, which will surely be feeling pretty low right now.

And one man who is certainly feeling defiant is Matt Doherty, who is coming in for plaudits for his reaction to the Edwards appointment.

Doherty is a player who could well become vital under Edwards.

The pair already have a relationship, with Doc having actually played in the two games Edwards had as interim manager back in 2016.

Doc kept in touch with Edwards, and is understandably pleased to see him back at the club.

Doherty had some words of defiance earlier this week, saying: “We’re in a poor spot right now, but it’s far from over. There’s still a lot of positive possibilities for us, and me for one firmly believes that. Then it’s up to us as leaders in the group to convince everybody else that there’s still a long way to go in the season. I do truly believe that.

“I have the belief that Rob Edwards is going to get us out of this and then we can remember everything that’s been said now and give them all the thumbs up when we stay up at the end of the season.”

On social media, fans really admired Doc’s tone.

@sansofewolf: “Well said Matt.”

@idmahon: “Absolutely love this! That’s the right attitude to have!”

@leeb1977: “Fair play Matt. Good to hear some fight. Hope he takes this into the dressing room and galvanises a few others.”

@krittterrr: “I remember a lot of dismay and annoyance, myself included, when he re-signed a couple years back & whiles he’s not the same player he was under Nuno, he’s a consummate pro and one of the better/consistent performers the past two years. Up the Irish Cafu.”

A great message from Doherty

Doherty may not wear the armband for Wolves but these are the words of a captain.

Doc also urged his teammates to get on board with the new manager, saying: “They have to be. They better be. They’ve got no choice but to be.”

It’s a forceful tone, and the Irishman clearly recognises the need for a big push from everyone to rectify the situation.

One gets the sense that Doc will be an important figure at Wolves in the coming months, but hopefully, we can see others stepping up in terms of showing leadership – something that has been lacking this term.
