Wolves fans think Gary O’Neil has just hit the nail on the head, amid Fosun criticism

It’s safe to say that many Wolves fans are deeply unhappy with how the club is being run – and Gary O’Neil made some points this week that have drawn praise.

Wolves sit bottom of the Premier League table after taking just two points from the first eight games.

It is looking highly likely that Wolves will be fighting against relegation this season, and it remains to be see whether Vitor Pereira can turn things around.

Pereira was backed with a new Wolves contract only last month, which is a decision that now looks totally baffling.

That potentially means he’ll be sticking around for at least a few weeks yet, as Fosun put their faith in the man they’ve backed.

That new contract seems to be just one of many questionable calls the Wolves owners have made in recent years.

Arguably, they have now risked the club’s Premier League status after overseeing one of the worst summers since they acquired Wolves – and fans are extremely unhappy.

On Monday night, Gary O’Neil made an appearance on Monday Night Football again.

The former Wolves boss remains out of work and looking for a new opportunity, and again caught the eye in the studio.

It did not work out for him at Wolves for a variety of reasons, and the criticism of him towards the end was certainly warranted.

But he undoubtedly speaks well – and O’Neil’s comments about club structure on Monday really resonated with Wolves fans.

He essentially said that the role of the head coach is not the most important at a football club, and that for success to happen, everything around the manager needs to be structurally sound.

On social media, fans praised O’Neil for his take, applying his comments to the current situation at Molineux.

@WolvesTalk: “Gary O’Neil spot on about how vital club structure is. Exactly what Wolves have lacked under Jeff Shi – no clear vision, no stability, no direction.”

@wwfc_matt09: “Well said Gaz!! #wwfc

@Rich2086: “He’s right that’s why we shift strategy and go through managers so quickly, there’s zero succession plan. Even now they have all their eggs in the Vitor Pereira basket, should have a proper structure behind him and then when a manager goes we don’t have to rip the entire thing up.”

@jane_janegough: “Hopefully someone at Fosun realises the weight of this and acts upon in by removing Shi and installing someone who knows something about proper football.”

@rjcICCS: “He knows the mess we are in!”

Fosun should take note

At this point, fans will really doubt whether things will ever really change under Fosun. It was claimed earlier this year that the penny had dropped for Fosun and Wolves officials regarding the need to spend to stay clear of danger.

The Wolves owners should definitely take note of what O’Neil said, if they have any intent on making the club competitive again.

Arguably, it doesn’t matter how good a manager is. If the structure around them isn’t as it should be, then he will fail.

And the structure that’s been in place at Wolves is simply not conducive to pushing on and having a go.

Vitor Pereira, O’Neil, Julen Lopetegui, Bruno Lage and Nuno Espirito Santo have all bemoaned not having the right players to really push on.

When so many managers say the same thing, the only place to look is at the owners.

While things are as they are, with Fosun unwilling to show true ambition, Wolves cannot hope to be anything more than a club that fights against relegation.
