Wolves fans slam ‘pointless’ Gary O’Neil signing with potential early exit now on the cards

The goalkeeper situation at Wolves has been one of the biggest points of interest this season.

During the summer, Jose Sa was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia and the feeling was that he would eventually make that move.

This was certainly the feeling when Wolves signed Sam Johnstone from Crystal Palace, with Sa having not yet made his move.

But in the end, a move to Saudi did not materialise for Sa, and the pair have been fighting it out for the number one jersey since.

Currently, Sa has the shirt and seemingly, he will be the number one under new manager Vitor Pereira.

That has now cast doubt on Sam Johnstone, who could reportedly leave the club this month.

Wolves signed Johnstone for £10 million.

That was a lot of money to pay for a goalkeeper, and many presumed that this would see him become the number one.

Johnstone did start off in favour at Molineux after sealing his transfer.

But his poor form, combined with an early injury, allowed Sa to get back in. And Sa has largely kept his place.

As a result of the situation, Johnstone could now leave the club this month and amid this claim, fans have taken to social media to criticise the decision to sign him in the first place.

Johnstone transfer hasn’t worked out

The Johnstone transfer really hasn’t worked out at all and it will be really interesting now to see what happens with him this month.

Wolves surely wouldn’t have signed Johnstone had they known Sa was staying. The club probably thought he was going to leave, and jumped the gun to sign Johnstone.

Unfortunately, Johnstone’s form since signing has been poor, and he’s not been able to make that number one jersey his own.

It’s hard to see how Wolves can possibly make their money back on him, and it’s a deal that is certainly embarrassing for Matt Hobbs, O’Neil and whoever else was involved in it.

Unless a Saudi club comes back in for Sa in January, the situation certainly looks bleak now for Johnstone at Molineux.
