Matt Jackson was promoted as Wolves’ technical director in late 2025, and with Jeff Shi exiting the club, he is sure to have a much bigger say in the decisions made.
His first big task will be how Wolves operate in the January window, and with interest in Joao Gomes and Premier League clubs circling around Jorgen Strand Larsen, he will have his hands full.
Fans will be hoping that with Jackson having more power, the same mistakes that have led the Wanderers to sleepwalk to relegation will be avoided going forward.
And with Rob Edwards confirming Wolves have to sell to buy, these latest comments about Matt Jackson certainly bode well for the Old Gold.
Give your HONEST thoughts on Rob Edwards’ January admission.
Matt Jackson praised for his negotiating skills
With the window open and Wolves looking to buy and sell, getting the right deals is paramount for the club. The decisions made will not only impact how this season ends but will also have consequences for next campaign too.
If players are to be sold, the Wanderers will need to extract as much cash as possible and make sure clubs do not try and get a cut-price deal because of Wolves’ circumstances.
However, Portsmouth’s sporting director, Rich Hughes, who once worked with Matt Jackson at Wigan, has said something that shows Wolves will not be ripped off.
Speaking to the Athletic, Hughes said, “He’s a really tough negotiator, very strategic with a lot of things, and he has walked in many different pairs of shoes in football. I think that gives him quite a unique skill set.
“He’s an incredibly top operator and very well connected, incredibly well respected within the game, and I’m surprised it’s taken as long as it has for him to be the focal point of Wolves.”
What does Matt Jackson have to do to prove himself to Wolves fans?
Work seems to be underway for incomings already, as Sam Surridge has been identified as a potential striking option.
Additionally, Wolves have sounded out a deal for Hibernian’s Kieron Bowie.
Matt Jackson is auditioning in front of Wolves fans

The January window is Matt Jackson’s first true test at Wolves as technical director, and whether it is a success will be decided by fans.
Supporters of the Old Gold have never shied away from making their grievances about the hierarchy at Wolves known, and with Fosun still at the helm, Jackson will face immense scrutiny for each and every decision.
Jackson not only has to do right by Wolves, but he also has to improve his reputation among fans, and that is easier said than done.
Fans have been growing frustrated over the last few years, but the technical director must now prove that he understands the identity and culture required at the club.
