The 2024/25 Premier League campaign doesn’t end for another month, but it appears the Matheus Cunha saga could be wrapped up very soon.
When Cunha signed a new contract in the summer, it quickly became clear that multiple clubs would be interested in triggering his £62.5 million release clause.
Champions League-battling teams such as Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United wanted to sign him, although it appears Cunha will join Manchester United.
It was reported on Thursday that the two clubs have both agreed on a transfer for the player, with Cunha even dropping another hint over his future on Instagram.
For a while, Wolves fans have accepted that the 25-year-old will leave, and now they’ve sent a clear message to Vitor Pereira.
Wolves fans want Matheus Cunha dropped to the bench
Controversy has followed the talented Brazilian throughout this season, and most recently, Cunha returned from a four-match suspension.
Pereira left him on the bench against Tottenham but the centre-forward responded in the best way possible by scoring in the second half and apologising to the Wolves fans.
Jean-Ricner Bellegarde then dropped out of the starting lineup against Man United on Sunday, with Cunha replacing him.
But as Amorim conversed with Cunha once left the pitch and the fact he’s heading for the exit door, Wolves supporters don’t want him to play for the remainder of the campaign.
“He shouldn’t be on the bench he shouldn’t even be in the squad! Let him train with the kids and concentrate on giving players who want to be here game time,” one fan wrote.
“Leave him on the bench, we’re practically already in pre-season,” another replied.
“And yeah, leave him on the bench the rest of the season,” a third commented.
“Definitely don’t play him any more now,” one supporter agreed while a sixth said: “Out of the squad for the rest of the season for me. Give minutes to players who will be here like R Gomes, JRB, hell, even the young lad Mane probably deserves a few minutes against a poor Leicester team.”
“If this is correct then he shouldn’t play another game for Wolves; leave him in the stands!!” a seventh exclaimed.
Cunha has tarnished his Wolves legacy
Cunha’s previous comments about how he loves the club were just empty words that had no meaning to them.
The way the Brazil international has acted since signing a new contract has been pathetic. Instead of focusing on his football and not losing his temper, he’s let a potential summer move distract him.
He’s conducted interviews that suggest he’s going to leave and posted hints across social media, which have riled up the fanbase.
Ultimately, becoming a top player is more than just quality on the pitch – it’s how you conduct yourself off it – and Cunha currently falls short in that regard.
The talented centre-forward has to fix his attitude before leaving the club and work on his conduct because those two things along will hold him back.
Cunha could have left Wolves as an icon, much like Ruben Neves, but instead he will depart in a similar vein to Matheus Nunes, and that is sad.
