Wolves fans have picked their ultimate past and present XI, there’s no Matheus Cunha

There is a lot of doom and gloom about Wolves at the moment, and there are definitely many players that fans miss.

Wolves used to be a side that most teams in the Premier League genuinely feared.

Under Nuno Espirito Santo, Wolves could beat anyone on their day, and many fans certainly miss the days of the club finishing in the top half, competing in the Europa League and going deep in the FA Cup.

Even in the couple of years after Nuno’s exit, there were still positive moments, with fans getting to watch quality players.

Now though, Wolves are in real trouble, with the squad arguably in its worst shape since promotion back in 2018.

It is no surprise then, that fans plumped for mostly former players when asked for their submissions by BBC Sport for their favourite Wolves XI.

With the international break in full swing, BBC Sport decided to ask Wolves fans for their favourite XIs.

There were many submissions, and BBC Sport have roughly crunched the numbers to provide the Wolves XI featuring the most common picks by fans.

And it’s some team.

In goal, fans mostly submitted Rui Patricio as their favourite goalkeeper.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the team is set up with a back three and wing-backs, which is the formation Wolves have had the most success with.

Matt Doherty and Rayan Ait-Nouri are right and left wing-backs respectively, and then it’s Conor Coady, Willy Boly and Romain Saiss.

Then, there’s a three-man midfield, consisting of Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho and Joao Gomes, who is the only current Wolves player to be selected.

Up top, there is a partnership that often left Wolves fans blown away – Raul Jimenez and the late Diogo Jota.

Wolves have had some serious talents

This is some team, and it doesn’t even include other brilliant past representatives like Matheus Cunha, Pedro Neto, Jonny Castro Otto Nelson Semedo or Adama Traore. Clearly, fans felt very strongly towards the players of the Nuno days.

Even Ait-Nouri was actually a Nuno signing, although he did become much more prominent under the likes of Bruno Lage and Gary O’Neil.

It does speak volumes that only one current player made it into this team in the form of Joao Gomes.

Wolves are now in their eighth season in the Premier League and somehow, we’re at a point whereby the squad is the weakest it’s been since promotion.

That this has been allowed to happen is shocking from Fosun.

Yes they oversaw some brilliant times at Molineux, and initially invested well to bring some fantastic players to the club.

But the way they have let things slip has been unforgivable – and their risky approach could now see the club drop back into the Championship next year.
