Wolves fans are making a strong point about Conor Coady as Rob Edwards era begins

A return to Wolves for Conor Coady has been a semi-regular topic of discussion since he left in 2023 – and earlier this week a very intriguing claim was made about the former captain.

Conor Coady departed Wolves in 2023, after he had been deemed surplus to requirements.

Coady went out on loan to Everton the season before and then left Wolves on the watch of Julen Lopetegui. Lopetegui, of course, then ended up walking away from Wolves just days before the start of the 2023/24 season, with Gary O’Neil coming in.

He spent two seasons at Leicester City, before making a shock move to Wrexham in the summer of 2025.

So far, Coady has made just five appearances in the Championship, with Wrexham going pretty well in 13th.

On Wednesday, after the official announcement that Rob Edwards was Wolves’ new manager, a very interesting claim was made about Coady.

Apparently, Wolves have held talks about a potential coaching role for former skipper Coady.

It was said that this would be unlikely, but that hasn’t stopped Wolves fans from having their say.

Over the last two years, some Wolves fans have campaigned for Coady’s return.

But at no point has the notion of him returning in a coaching capacity ever come up until now.

Seemingly, it is understandably unlikely that Coady will stop playing for Wrexham.

But for Wolves fans, the idea of a return to Wolves for Coady as a coach could actually be a really smart one.

@hondo85lucas: “Well he’s not retired yet so should be player coach.”

@Matt_135790: “As a coach he would be brilliant to have, but I highly doubt coady would wanna gonna give up playing just yet.”

@jones_nath25925: “That would be so good.”

@wwfc2004: “This would be unreal wouldn’t it.”

@FozyPunkFolk: “Pity really.”

Wolves miss Coady’s leadership

One criticism that’s been levelled at the decision-makers at Wolves is that the current squad lacks natural leaders.

The make-up of the squad has seen the captain’s armband be passed around from pillar to post this season, which is far from ideal.

Toti Gomes is the club captain and, while he is respected, he is not a particularly loud voice or commanding presence, and he also hasn’t done well enough to be out there playing every minute this season, which is what you need from a captain.

Wolves were a significant part of Conor Coady’s footballing career

Coady did have his critics when he was at Wolves, but there could be no faulting his leadership qualities or captaincy credentials.

He got what it meant to play for Wolves and, at the very least, he always ensured he upheld standards.

He had a huge personality and perfectly suited the role of captain.

Perhaps him coming back as a coach won’t happen. But if it did and he joined Edwards’ team, it feels like it could only be a positive thing having him back.
