Wolves fans have expressed their frustrations over one decision Jeff Shi is reportedly about to make.
Yesterday was a big day as Rob Edwards was finally announced as Wolves’ new head-coach on a three-and-a-half-year contract.
Lots of people have had a say on this appointment, with many unhappy over Edwards’ decision to leave Boro for Wolves.
But the position of head coach at Wolves was something a dream job for Edwards, who previously spent time at the club as a player and coach.
He now faces the job of a lifetime. Wolves are eight points from safety and have one of the weakest squads in the Premier League, courtesy of Fosun, Domenico Teti and Vitor Pereira.
One thing is for sure; Wolves need a strong January window.
And one man who’ll be playing a part in Wolves’ mid-season business is Matt Jackson, who is reportedly set for a promotion to the role of sporting director.

Wolves fans frustrated with Jeff Shi as Matt Jackson set for sporting director role

Wolves had one of their worst transfer windows under Fosun in the summer.
Wolves often missed out on top targets, and the work of the recruitment team was apparently ignored at times by Teti and Pereira, who had their own ideas.
With Teti and Pereira both now gone and amid the start of a new era with Edwards, Matt Jackson is expected to be promoted to the role of sporting director.
The role had previously been dissolved, but it appears it will now return.
On social media though, this news about Jackson hasn’t gone down too well, with fans having grown tired of Shi’s tendency to promote from within, rather than make an external hire.
@BenGolding2: “Sellers, Hobbs now Jackson. Wonder what the odds are on Betty the tea lady getting the role in a few years.”
@AdamStockhall: “You cannot write it, rather than go out and get an experienced sporting director, they just shuffle round the management 🤦♂️🤦♂️”
@CallumD4_: “Says we need a refresh then carries on moving people from within up a position just like we have every time someone has left/been sacked in the last 5 years. Eventually we’ll have nobody left to promote 😂.”
@Russ_3023: “Another that will just be delighted to have the job and do as Jeff says.”
@iareed: “Hasn’t exactly covered himself in glory so far… 🤦♂️”
@StuArtDesign_: “Can Jeff not see past the end of his nose? What did he do, whoever gets the shortest straw. 12 months’ time he’ll be on the blower to Vitor no doubt.”
A fresh pair of eyes may have been better for Wolves
If Jackson does now become Wolves’ sporting director, then it’s certainly an interesting call.
Some fans do not believe that he is worthy of the role given how poor recruitment has been in 2025 and even before.
Jackson has been Wolves’ director of player recruitment and development, meaning he will have played a key role in helping to bring the players we see in the squad today.
Are you confident Rob Edwards will help Wolves avoid relegation?
He may well rise to the occasion in January.
But certainly, the frustrations of some Wolves fans with Shi for making another internal hire are understandable.
That said, given how much trouble Wolves are in right now, there perhaps wouldn’t be that many takers in terms of top, external sporting directors.
