Wolves face strong Graham Potter competition as Champions League club enter race

Wolves fans are wondering if Monday could be Gary O’Neil’s final match in charge.

Gary O’Neil oversaw a 4-0 defeat against Everton earlier this week and is seemingly now on the brink of the sack at Molineux.

Speculation was rife about his position the morning after that abysmal defeat to Everton. But it was claimed that O’Neil would be given the West Ham game.

The claim O’Neil will take the team against West Ham went down very badly with fans, as some feel he cannot turn things around.

A number of managers have been mentioned as potential replacements for O’Neil, the latest being Carlos Corberan, who is West Bromwich Albion’s manager.

There was a lot of talk about Graham Potter after the Everton game, but Wolves seem to have a very tough act convincing him to come.

Both Wolves and West Ham have been linked with Graham Potter.

Potter has been out of work since April 2023 after leaving Chelsea, but is seemingly in high demand right now.

It’s been claimed Wolves actually held talks with Potter recently about replacing O’Neil, and some fans remain hopeful he will give a move to Molineux the green light.

But it’s starting to feel unlikely he’ll come, with The Sun now reporting RB Leipzig have joined the hunt.

The Sun actually also mention Wolves’ interest, but say a return to management could come in the form of the German club, who have struggled recently.

RB Leipzig didn’t win any of their four games in November and finished the month by losing 5-1 to Wolfsburg.

They’re also third from bottom of the Champions League table having lost all five of their League Phase matches so far.

In a potential boost for Wolves though, Leipzig won yesterday against Holstein Kiel, which may keep manager Marco Rose in place a little while longer, perhaps giving Molineux officials more time to try and persuade Potter.

Graham Potter seems unlikely for Wolves

If it’s true Leipzig have entered the race for Potter, then that’s a blow for Wolves, because that’s surely a job he’d be interested in.

It didn’t work out for Potter at Chelsea, and it’s possible he might fancy another a job abroad, having previously had success with Swedish outfit Ostersund.

Leipzig are a side that have been up near the top of the Bundesliga in recent years, but haven’t been able to do what Bayer Leverkusen did and actually break the dominance of Bayern Munich.

Potter may well fancy managing in Germany, rather than go through an undoubtedly stressful job of managing Wolves or West Ham.

The fact nothing seems to have come of the recent talks with Potter suggests he just doesn’t fancy the gig at Molineux – and you can understand it, given the transfer model at the club.
